Beyond the Backyard

In the coming weeks Chicago’s Museum of Contemporary Photography will reopen following renovation. The first exhibition in the new space is Beyond the Backyard. Pulling primarily from the Museum’s permanent collection, the exhibition provides a variety of perspectives on the back yard. Notions of privacy, nature and domestication are all intertwined. A sub-theme comes from how photography itself questions traditional definitions of the back yard.

One of the artists presented is Amy Stein. Her “Watering Hole” (2005), shown above, clearly questions the nature of the backyard as domesticated space.

The exhibition is on view from June 20 – August 23.
