What is Rock & Roll? For Gail Buckland, Rock & Roll is more than just a sound, it is a communal spirit. As a photography historian, Buckland has covered a fair range of topics. Her latest, not surprisingly, is Rock & Roll. In Who Shot Rock & Roll: A Photographic History, 1955-PresentBuckland compiles a thrilling list of figures in both portrait and action photographs. The obvious names – Dylan, Jagger, and Lennon – are there. So are rappers like LL Cool J and Salt ‘n Pepper. In this, Buckland offers not just a compelling photographic history, but one that speaks to the intermingling of sounds and breadth of “rock & roll” as a cultural phenomenon. Some audiophiles might scoff, understandably, yet those who live music through the stars and find inspiration in the voices will certainly be pleased by the selections.
