From 1957 to 1965 photographer W. Eugene Smith ran his apartment at 821 Sixth Avenue as something of a jazz salon (this following a nervous breakdown). With an open door policy, Smith entertained hoards of jazz musicians and artists. The resulting photographs and recordings form an important and engaging portrait of an era.
