Shot in San Francisco, the Spring/Summer 2011 lookbook from Aether shares the brand’s commitment to a range of outdoor pursuits. You’ll find boating, cycling, and most importantly good old fashioned kicking back at the beach. As expected, the garments meld functionality with sleek silhouettes created to work equally well on a yacht and on the block.
While Aether is based in LA, you’ll find no SoCal/NorCal rivalry here… in fact, there is sound reasoning for the decision to capture the Northern climate. With that in mind, we caught up with the Aether team to discuss their inspirations for the current season and to find out who owns the worst boards shorts in the world.

SL: The SS2011 look book was shot in San Francisco. What makes the city the right place for an Aether shoot?
Aether: We make clothes for “weather” and SF is a great place to experience our clothes in the elements. Plus, when you live in LA too long, it is good to remember that Spring does not mean 75 and sunny in most parts of the world.
SL: There’s always been a subtle ski/surf dynamic to Aether styling, now there’s a bit of bike as well. What was the inspiration behind the Transit jacket?
Aether: Living in a city, bike riding is a big part of our lives, so it felt natural to create a jacket that gets us to and from the office. We have enjoyed the development process and are excited to further refine this category in the future. As the brand grows we want to explore other areas / activities where we feel Aether can bring its aesthetics.
SL: What other pieces are you particularly excited about this spring?
Aether: The space vest, which is the perfect layering vest for the colder days as well as a stand alone garment – nothing is as soft or as light as our “Space” pieces.
SL: Outwear is an obvious interest for you guys, but you make some great layering pieces. Tell me a little about your sweatshirts.
Aether: Our sweatshirts are a great example of what we are all about – the fabric, fit and hidden details. Superior USA cottons, athletic fit rather than slouchy casual, and every piece is music/phone integrated from front pocket to hood. They just work, feel and look great.
SL: Finally, board shorts. We’ve all seen bad ones – Corona label graphics (note, my brother wears these in an effort to be “hilarious”), flowers, etc. – what are the worst you’ve seen?
Aether: This friend of ours who runs a blog about leaning once wore a pair of board shorts in Vegas, covered with images of Trump’s apt. It was all very gold.
