Freshjive Hearts Raymond Chandler – Spring 2012 Collection

Too many people don’t fully realize that you cannot fade Raymond Chandler. Perpetually tagged with the derogatory “mystery-writer” label, he was actually one of the 20th century’s finest novelists. So ups to Freshjive for giving him an heartfelt nod with their Spring 2012 collection. Culling inspiration from some words we wrote in an essay on his craft—“Down these mean streets a man must go who is not himself mean, who is neither tarnished nor afraid … He talks, that is, with rude wit, a lively sense of the grotesque, a disgust for sham, and a contempt for pettiness.”—the label has once again employed rising professional boxer Zachary Wohlman to display their wares.

An earlier preview of the collection hinted at a cross-sectional look at L.A.’s history and for a fluid understanding of what makes the city tick, you simply must read Chandler. But enough on the old anglophile, the clothes here are on-the-money, effusing a neo-noir set of lines alongside a forward thinking balance of patterns and separates (a wide-striped tank, for instance). While many of the looks could easily exist in the ’50s, none of them seem trapped there. Nice little video love-letter to the era below.
