Barcelona Design – “Mettsass” Table

You do not need us to tell you that style, like history, moves in cycles. But take this table. Created by Italian architect and designer Ettore Sottsass in 1972, it looks as 2012 as it does the year Godfather hit theaters. Testing its modern mettle is possible thanks to Barcelona Design, who have relaunched the piece in celebration of their 40th anniversary. The original table was Sottsass’s first design for the company, and he described it as part of his search for “sensual and exciting” design.

The table is made from flat sheets of steel and has a glass top—all of it painted with a glossy finish. “A testament to Sottsass’ superlative eye, the table remains as fresh and provocative today as it did during its debut 40 years ago,” Cool Hunting suggests. If you really want fresh and provocative, check the picture of Sottsass cradling a beautifully rendered cock-and-balls below.
