Levi’s Vintage Clothing – ‘Oil & Leather’ – The Biker Jacket & 21 Artists

Levi’s Vintage Clothing explore the world of the biker during the 50s and 60s in their Fall Winter 2012 collection. To celebrate they’ve commissioned 21 artists across the globe to hand paint their classic black leather jacket in traditional rider style. “At first, GI’s returning from WWII with hand-painted leather flight jackets inspired the biker gangs of America to decorate their motorbike jackets in their own crude handwriting. Over time, subject matter shifted from pin-up girls, aircraft and squadron names to motorcycles, gangs, and skulls.” From tattooists such as Chicago’s Nick Colella to UK illustrators including Ben Lamb and Yuko Kondo, the brief was an open one – Create something beautiful in your own hand using oil paints, an untouched black leather jacket.  On show at Levi’s flagship Union Square, San Francisco store, the label has will also be revisiting another classic. Images from 1968 published ‘The Bikeriders’, a photographic series by Danny Lyons, owner of a 650-cc Triumph and member of the Chicago Outlaws Motorcycle Club, will also be on show. Incredible images will sit alongside unseen documents such as letters from Hunter S. Thompson, outtakes and contact sheets.
