Anyone looking for somewhere to lay their head on a visit to London town would do well to take a look at One Leicester Street, a five-storey Georgian building in Chinatown. A new concept on an old site, you may recognise this as the former St John Hotel. Now part of the Unlisted Collection (alongside the beautiful Town Hall Hotel in Bethnal Green), the revamped hotel is a project from Singaporean hotelier Peng Loh and Michelin starred Chef Patron Tom Harris (head chef at the old St John restaurant on site). Just 15 rooms, the hotel is already gaining fans for its impressively stocked bar and restaurant “offering the very best of British produce,” curing, smoking and pickling all manner of goodness on-site. Interiors have that softly lit, ’50s colour-range, big leather armchair feel encouraging much lobby loitering, because we all enjoy a good sit-down. Nice little touches via specially-commissioned menu illustrations, handmade staff uniforms and painted typographic signage remove that sense of generic hotel stay. We recently had a nosey around the place and sat down for lunch, y’know, just to be polite. Take a look at the full tour in our gallery.
