Selectism Q&A: Phillip Lim on his collaboration with Target for Fall 2013

Last May, we showed you the first look preview of 3.1 Phillip Lim‘s collaboration with Target. With their men’s and women’s collections coming in stores next month, Selectism sat down with Phillip Lim himself to get a closer look at what’s in store. The men’s assortment includes popular basics from his past collections and strong accessory pieces, from rucksacks, duffles and sneakers to leather boots. Read on for why Lim chose Target as his partner, the man he designs for and his favorite pieces from the menswear collection.

There are many other retailers you could have collaborated with — Kmart, H&M, etc., — why Target?

I used to shop at Target. My parents took me there all the time for back-to-school shopping. It’s great after actually having experience with them as a child and coming back with them. What I love about Target is their willingness. They’re so modern in their thought, they’re actually pushing me sometimes. They would be like, “That’s it? We want more.” That was very pleasantly surprising.

How has your partnership been with Target in terms of compromising between design and production?

The thing is, we’ve been courting for about five years now and back then I said no because I wasn’t ready. But with experience and maturity now having been in the market, I understand the reality of things. I came into it knowing what to expect and what I can do. In the end, it was a really smooth collaboration. It was a true collaboration where we cared about every step. I’m so blown away with what they’re doing.

Who did you design the menswear collection for?

It’s for the modern-day man. It’s for myself. Friends of mine. Guys who are always on the go. It’s kind of trying to define the new modern staple and really reducing it down to the core wardrobe of masculinity, but at the same time, [of] focused confidence.

What can we expect from the collection in terms of clothing styles or kinds of accessories?

It’s actually clothes that I’ve been working [on] with my own brand ever since the conception of it. It’s really cool, easy, chic wardrobe for the man on-the-go.

What’s your favorite piece from the collection?

One of my favorites is the grab-and-go pouches. We are in such a hurry nowadays and we think a lot about the main things we put on, but what’s as important is what we put on underneath. It’s quite amazing because [the pouch includes] a nice brief t-shirt, socks and boxers that match. [They are] comfortable and easy, you can wear them with blazers, trousers, sweats… and you’re good.

Which do you think is the most investment-worthy piece in this collection?

The jackets. The biker jacket is perfecto: it’s leather, [has] a nice fit to it. Something like this you’ll have forever. Unless someone steals it.

Shop the collection when it hits Target stores on September 15th. Prices range from $19.99 to $299.99 for apparel and $19.99 to $59.99 for accessories.
