Nowness release another film in their “Shorts on Sundays” series, this week taking a look at sign painters. The atmospheric short, an edit of the full length documentary, follows filmmakers Sam Macon and Faythe Levine cross-country, stopping off in Los Angeles, New York, Minnesota and Seattle. They give the viewer an insight into the lost art of hand-lettered sign painting, meeting such artists as Mike Meyer and Sean Barton. “Faythe had a group of friends she’d met in Minneapolis who had started an informal apprenticeship with an established sign painter named Phil Vandervaart. The group of guys had all gone on to become working sign painters in various cities across the US with one of them in Stockholm. Being interested in lettering, process and public space, we decided to dive in.” Press play.
