For his largest solo exhibition yet, Ai Weiwei installs 6,000 wooden stools across the vast, echoey space that is the Martin-Gropius-Bau hall in Berlin. Opening tomorrow, Evidence features a combination of new works and pieces unseen in Germany, a mammoth undertaking, the show spans 3,000 square metres across 18 rooms. Stools stands as the mind-blowing centrepiece, found in the building’s atrium, a reference to earlier work and ongoing themes, the gallery describes “an aesthetically pleasing, pixel-like work, these stools, according to Ai Weiwei, are an expression of the centuries-old aesthetic of rural China.” See for yourself in the gallery.

Ai Weiwei – Evidence runs 3 April to 7 July 2014 at Martin-Gropius-Bau, Niederkirchnerstraße 7, 10963 Berlin.
