London Collections: Men Preview | Bobby Abley for MAN Spring/Summer 2015

LC:M kicks off today and so we bring you the last of our previews for Spring/Summer 2015. MAN participant Bobby Abley followed his time at Ravensbourne College with stints at the likes of Alexander McQueen and Jeremy Scott. A fan of cartoon OTT, previous collections have taken Disney sweetness to dark places, never have Mickey ears looked so sinister. With Spring/Summer 2015 “a bit of a 180″ as Abley describes, we hear more on this new direction in our pre-show chat.

Tell us a little about your preparation for SS15, when does it all begin and what’s the starting point?

Usually I’ll start thinking about the next collection while I’m making the current one but I kind of push it to one side to focus on what I’m doing. My Fall/Winter 2014 collection was very dark with the styling etc. so I’ve done a bit of a 180 with Spring/Summer 2015, things are a bit more upbeat and fitting for the season with the prints and so on.

How would you sum up SS15?

I would say all round its fun and strong. I have a few different fabric stories and some interesting fabrics that I haven’t worked with before. There are some splashes of bold color as well; it’s definitely a confident collection.

Can you give us an insight into some of the details?

I like to always keep a most of the pieces relaxed, so the silhouettes are mostly sports inspired. I have some great embroidery pieces that are hard to miss as well as my accessories. They are very functional accessories, something I’ve never done before but they are perfect for the theme of this season.

Who did you have in mind when designing the collection? And would you say you generally design for yourself or others?

I have to admit I am quite a selfish designer, meaning when I have my ideas and sort of theme for the collection I always think what I would like to wear based on this, but then throughout the process of putting the collection together I start to mix that with things everyone can wear (hopefully.)

Is there one piece you’re really excited to unveil?

There is one look in particular that I can’t wait to see on the catwalk. I’m sure you’ll know which one I’m talking about when you see it.

Anyone else on the schedule you’re looking forward to checking out?

I’m really looking forward to seeing what Jeremy does with the Moschino men’s collection…I’m sure that will be interesting.
