Selectism Weekend Links

Other

Here we start a new series of links that we come across that we find interesting. We are not sure how regular this will come, but expect it a couple of times per week, just to keep you on top of what is going on!

Apparently Hedi Slimane is talking to LVMH about launching a label under his own name. Even though we are still big Dior Homme fans, we cannot wait to see what he has up his sleeves. More here...

True Religion opens another flagship store in Manhattan. How long will the denim craze last? True Religion was one of the early ones to enter this market, let's see how far the growth will go. More here...

Nike Sales rose this past year, mainly due to overseas growth. The sportswear giant has quietly entered some untraditional sports markets, at least for them. Soccer, action sports, skateboarding, etc. The fashion sneaker game has also been very successful in past year, mainly due to re-releases of classics, but we suspect that that will not be enough anymore next year. More here...

Notcot put out without a doubt one of the most interesting Holiday gift guides this year. Holiday shopping is almost over, but we don't really care, because we like shopping all year around. Check it out here...

Burton has recently opened their largest flagship store to date, and who would have suspected that it would be in Los Angeles. HighSnobiety has two interesting interviews up with Hiroshi Fujiwara (Japanese style icon and Burton adviser) as well as with the Creative Director of Burton, Greg Dacyshyn.

This should keep you busy for a while!

Muji - The Civilized World Finds A Refuge

Stores

Muji NYC Flagship Store

The New York Times has a nice new article up about the recently opened Muji Flagship Store in Manhattan - The Civilized World Finds A Refugee.

"Muji’s bright cube-room on Broadway takes all the ugliness out of shopping. A refined combination of Kate’s Paperie, Uniqlo, Bed Bath & Beyond and the Container Store, it is the folded-down, crisp origami essence of a superstore. Everything here seems a necessity — stationery, bedding, flatware, rain gear — so that for once in your consumer holiday journeying, you can shop for gifts and convince yourself you are not being a slop pig."

Check it out here.

Colette x Kaws shopping bag

Our favorite shop in Paris has to be Colette. Its diversity, selection and sense of everything is just always appealing. No matter if you want the latest t-shirt, book, cd, jewelry or Gucci bag, you can be sure they will have it before everybody else.

For the holiday season they have introduced some nice collectors shopping bags, designed by NYC artist Kaws. We have also been a big fan of the artist since a couple of years, so here is just another reason to hit up Colette, not that you need one though!

Visvim Kiefer-Hi Nez Perce/Nome

Sneakers

Visvim Kiefer-Hi Nez Perce Nome

Here you see the latest Visvim release, the Kiefer-Hi Nez Perce/Nome. Several concepts out of the Fall/Winter 2007 collection are united on these shoes, so we will give a little background on that. Nez Perce is the trinagle pattern, that we have already seen on clothing as well as on shoes, recently on the FBT. Nome is the fur series, coming with cow patterns and in uni colors, and has appeared this season on shoes before. This stle of Kiefer-Hi's now combines the two attributes and features the triangle pattern made out of fur on the upper. The Kiefer-Hi comes in premium leathers. Overall the pack consists of 4 colorways. Via ReInForce.

Check out all colorways after the jump.

Santa's Ghetto in Bethlehem

Art

santas ghetto by banksy

Santa's Ghetto is a low-cost art event, that has some pretty big names in it. This year (as reported earlier by us) they went to Bethlehem opposite the Church of the Nativity to put their art on the walls.

Participating artists were this year Banksy, Kelsey Brooks, Ron English, Swoon, Blu, Aiko, 3D and many others. There is a dedicated website of the event, showing lots of pictures of the art and the environment that is was created in. It definitely a very impressive art project.

They also released limited edition prints by some of the artists, including Banksy and Kelsey Brooks, but you have to hurry to get one of those!

See How You Play by Champion

Lately it is interesting to watch some of the classic sports brands re-appear. In general if you look at the sports goods sector, the success did not really come with innovation but rather revival of the classics. If you look at the giants in the market such as Nike, Adidas, Puma - in recent years we see hundreds of re-releases of shoes that first came out 15-25 years ago. Nike is running a vintage campaign for basically every sneaker that they designed prior to 1990. Adidas and Puma is no different. With the huge success of these brands with "old" remixed product, it only seems to make sense that sports brands that used to be big should go for a comeback. Exactly that is happening right now.

Starter (now part of Nike) is planning a massive campaign for 2008. Reebok, which lost so much over the years is slowly fighting its way back. The biggest comeback in recent years probably came from Converse. Champion is also working hard to establish itself again. They are right now running the "See How You Play" campaign with ads appearing in Vogue and InStyle. Champion in Vogue? Yes, you heard right.

Anyways, here below you see a video from the new Champion campaign. It is a very interesting market to watch. How long will these brands be able to succeed with "old" product, and when does the consumer finally step in and demand exciting new innovation. We think 2008/09 will be an interesting time in this market!

A.P.C. Daikanyama Homme Store

Stores

APC Daikanyama Flagship Store Japan

A.P.C. recenty renovated their Daikanyama Homme store in Japan and to do so they worked with famed Japanese architects from Wonderwall. Wonderwall has worked on many high profile projects, from most Bape stores around the globe to the recent Uniqo Flagship Store in NYC and many others.

Once again the architect perfectly translated the brands feel and image into the store. The mix of glass, concrete and warm woods, along with the contrasting industrial steel tubes turned out to be a great space.

Other A.P.C. stores around the globe have a different feel though. The NYC, Paris and Berlin flagship stores all have used wooden floors, antique wood applications, overall straight lines. The new Daikanyama store certainly seems more modern than the rest of them. Let's see if we will see that also in future stores.

After the jump many more pictures of the beautiful space.
