Whyszeck Fall/Winter 2008/09

Fashion

Selectism - Whyszeck Fall/Winter 2008-2009

Fashion designers and musicians are not such a different breeds. They make and construct a product that will hopefully be viewed, heard, and even discussed by persons with interest. But recently, the crossover comes full circle with some record labels becoming fashion labels - and amazing they work. Whyszeck of Sweden is not a record label but a band who turned fashion label. Since 2004, Fredrik Pira and Christian Cerna have been collaborating in music and fashion. Chosing the common theme for Fall inspiration, the British mod movement, Whyszeck brings parkas, rigid denim, and more to the mens market.

Monumental assemblies of constructed steel are almost a trademark for Louis Vuitton shops worldwide. Case in point is the latest construction from UNStudio for Louis Vuitton's Japan Flagshop store. As Dezeen describes, "The design for the 10 storey (54 meter tall) flagship Louis Vuitton store in Japan aims to establish an architectural equivalent of the identity of Louis Vuitton in which classical and modern qualities are blended, reinforcing each other. The design inspires the visitor with a feeling of being in the House of Louis Vuitton by celebrating the qualities that make up the essence of the company, its products, its history and its future." NYT - Shorts Crack the Code

Selectism - NYT - Shorts Crack the Code

NYT's Guy Trebay brings to the masses a story regarding the trend of above the knee shorts and their surge as part of the businessman's casual Friday look in the workplace. "The bare ankle migrated from country-club Saturdays to meeting-room Mondays and suddenly men, whether shod in wingtips or loafers, were widely seen without socks. Now it appears that, after some stops and starts in recent seasons, the men of the white collar work force are marching into the office in shorts."

J.Crew to Sell Vintage Rolexes

Accessories

J. Crew has been doing a great job recently of really putting together one of the best lifestyle brands around. Between their high profile collaborations with Selima Optique and Globe-trotter, to their new men's store opening in Tribeca this Fall, to bringing textiles, selvedge denim, and cashmeres from exclusive mills around the globe to consumers at an 'affordable' price, I'm not sure anyone is doing more to grow what has always been a solid brand.

Now J.Crew will begin to sell a large collection of vintage Rolexes in stores and on their website. The watch pictured above is listed at $7850.

The world’s oldest bottle of Veuve Clicquot found

The world’s oldest bottle of Veuve Clicquot was found in a Scottish castle in a dusty cabinet that had been locked up for the last 100 years.

Chris James, the current owner of Torosay Castle on the Isle of Mull off Scotland's west coast, told the London Telegraph he’d long been meaning to have a peek inside the cupboard, for which he had no key. After finally enlisting the help of a locksmith, James discovered the original owner’s personal booze stash, including bottles of claret and brandy, a decanter of port, and an unopened bottle of 1893 Veuve yellow label in mint condition, thanks to the cellar-like conditions that prevail in old Scottish castles. He contacted the company who informed him the ancient bubbly was literally priceless.

James agreed to let the winemakers have it for their archives in Reims. Via Getkempt

Bathing in the sun requires 1. eyewear and 2. alcohol... for some. The problem is when you mix the two. Luckily for you (me) Mykita's Flash Collection of sunglasses are made from a "highly innovated" material that makes them extremely flexible and lightweight. Have fun bending them or ripping them off the face of your casual dance partner next time you hit the Bordy Barn. Available now from oki-ni.

Rapha Marmotte Pack

Fashion, Caps & Hats

Selectism - Rapha Marmotte Pack

The Marmotte Pack from London's Rapha may be the finest cycling kit we've encountered for 2008. Taking its inspiration from the one day 174km La Marmotte event, the Marmotte kit sports a lightweight Rapha jersey, arm warmers, merino socks, and of course, the Rapha Cap, with its distinct black stripe. We prefer the kit in the white colourway. A damn good for the roads. Available now from rapha.cc.
