Brooks Bros acquires Southwick

Fashion

It appears Brooks Brothers acquired Southwick. The all American suit maker has been making tons of headlines lately. If you haven’t visited the Southwick site recently, now’s the time to get educated. Founded in 1929 by Nicholas and Vito Grieco, Italian immigrant brothers who honed their skills as master tailors in the US, Southwick is known for custom made suits with a fundamentally British attitude toward clothing; the natural shoulder philosophy. Southwick has been producing suits for Brooks Brothers for 60 years. The acquisition is a step on BB’s part to maintain American manufacturing capabilities. Via Wearethemarket.com

H&M to push the boundaries of their Mens Collection

Stores, Fashion

H&M have decided to put a little more elbow grease into their menswear line, focusing on a premium range that will be at thirty stores worldwide. Although no mention is made of COS in the article, it's likely that the success of their upscale big brother has led them to the conclusion that men will gladly pay more for higher quality.

According to head of men's design Ann-Sofie Johansson, the collection will focus on daring pieces like jumpsuits, fake fur coats and pieces with clever detailing. The collection will be available in Austria, Belgium, Canada, Hong Kong, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, The Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom and United States from mid September. Vested Interest

selectism - vested interest

Up now at the John Michael Kohler Arts Center, Vested Interest, tackles the notion of imbued meaning in garments and constructions of dress. Contemporary artists take to the idea, and offer their takes on the theme. The press release states:

"Garments and accessories have long been used as a way to share ideas and to address topics of social and cultural significance. Vested Interest comprises the works of seventeen contemporary artists who use dress to investigate issues of significant personal importance. Historical examples of adornment convey messages that offer an expanded context for understanding the social dimension of dress.

Several contemporary artists play on the idea that adornment can reveal personal opinions in a very public way. Lisa Anne Auerbach (CA), a passionate advocate for social change, knits sweaters and scarves emblazoned with text that encourages action. Others draw attention to the act of garment-making, tying into a broader investigation of labor, industry, and power. Undercutting “big business” and capitalist avenues of production, Alabama Chanin (AL) designs hand-stitched and embroidered garments that are constructed with care by artisans who live and work in Florence, Alabama. Still other artists find ways of linking personal history or beliefs to the idea of dress on a broader scale. Mark Newport (MI) presents his hand-knitted full-body suit, The Patriot, to simultaneously explore his own ideas of masculinity, stereotypes about men who knit, and what wearing red, white, and blue might mean today."

A interesting exploration of art and theory at one of Americas most innovative art centers. Open until September.

Call of the Wild Shapes and Triangles Tees

Fashion, Stores, New Dandyism

Clothing label Call of the Wild is the work of London-based graphic design duo Kai and Sunny. They are known for their unique application of design and art culminating in original apparel. Call of the Wild’s original concept was inspired by John Wyndham’s novel, Day of the Triffids, written in the 1950’s. It was the idea of nature fighting back. As Kai puts it,"most of our work has a connection with nature and shapes and limited colour palettes." The Shapes in Grey Marl, now $27, and the Triangles in White, now $18, (both pictured above) are available at NewDandyism.

NewDandyism's entire stock of Call of the Wild is on sale from 55-80%! And everything else in the store is discounted at least 50%. This is only going on for a limited time, so take advantage of it while you can.
