If the idea of summer reading stops the heart and forces cold sweats, it isn’t your fault. You were probably forced to read Clan of the Cave Bear as a teen. That experience, rightfully, is hard to shake. However, the dog days of summer is a great time to catch up on the best of contemporary literature. To reaffirm belief in the word. To reclaim the book.

In their June issue, the Believer named Tom McCarthy’s Remainder 2007 book of the year. Given our esteem for the publication, and its readers, we suggest that it move to (at least close to) the top of your summer reading pile. For those of you in the Southern Hemisphere… when do you do summer reading? December and January? Always wanted to know.
