World’s Smallest Book

selectism - World's Smallest Book

The smallest book in the World goes on sale this week at the Concept Store within Selfridges’ Wonder Room.

The leather bound book takes the art of printing and bookbinding to an entirely new dimension of precision.  Renowned German typographer Joshua Reichert especially created a colourful alphabet for this tiny ABC-picture book, exclusively produced in the traditional book city of Leipzig where the idea was originally born.

Measuring 2.4 x 2.9 mm and presented in a wooden box including a magnifying glass, this is the world’s smallest book in a published edition.  “It was printed in the usual way, but all the machinery and tools had to be created in miniature first.” The book is published by Die Gestalten.

Printed in an edition of 300, Selfridges have the last available stock of the title and at £70 a snip for such a collectable item.

More detailed images follow after the jump.

  1. it is so cute !but isnt it in every page its the alphabetized letter!

  2. Yaroslav:

It is NOT the smallest book in the World.
The smallest book in the world, printed in 1996 in Russia – “Chameleon”!
    It size – 0.9 x 0.9 mm!!!

  3. Stacey Cook:

It is pretty amazing and quite an accomplishment. My only question is however… What happen to the letter ‘z’ ?

  4. kev:

the letters are hard to read and “z” is missing. It is to fancy for me it took me a wile to figure out “n” and “u” is upsidedown I think it is weird.

  5. Nigar:

it’s not the smallest book in the world ))) we have smaller books in our Museum of Miniature Books In Azerbaijan. their sizes are 2×2 mm. And our museum is the only museum in the world ;) come and visit ;) ))))))

  6. Its not the smallest book the smallest is 0.40.4mm but still very cute

  7. Robert:

@Stacey C: It might have to do with pagination. I worked as an Creative Art Director and ‘pagination’ was everything in anything longer than a two-sided brochure. If you don’t know what ‘pagination’ means…look it up in the world’s smallest dictionary! LOL!

There are two ways to print a miniature book
    1. traditional block printing, using (hand) carved letters set in a block – this takes skill, time and patience
    2. using a computer guided laser printer – anyone can do this

This book may be small and leather bound, but it has only one letter to the page. There is a leather bound book, printed in Germany in 19th century and approx 5mm x 6mm, with approximately twenty lines of text.
Other books may be smaller, but for a tradionally printed book this has got to be close to the smallest text, which is what really counts.
