A set of 10 stamps celebrating classic British 20th century design has been released by the Royal Mail. Like celebrations are nothing new, the United States Postal Service issued Eames themed stamps last year. What’s exciting is the range of objects – from fashion to aviation – represented. A wonderful cross section of design. (Via Dezeen).

Thom Browne At Pitti Uomo

With much anticipation many have waited for the Thom Browne presentation at Pitti Uomo this week, as the designer had already previously announced that he would go a more conservative way for this first venture into Europe. Thanks to the Moment we can show you some images of the presentation, which turned out to be really sharp.

“Everything was so pin-sharp – the taut tailored suits, the metallic clatter of typewriters and the modernist Mussolini architecture – that Thom Browne’s Florentine excursion was a pure and powerful distillation of his message.” Via IHT.

Take a more detailed look at the presentation, which just consisted of two suits and a couple of other pieces from his collection, but was still extremely strong, after the jump.

Oi Polloi Moccasins

Check out this set of hand crafted moccasins from Oi Polloi. The crepe sole makes the ride on these incredibly soft. “Made from extra heavy, quality Swiss hides that are tanned in England by a small, family owned tannery. Using a process that no one in the world has been able to duplicate, the fibers of the leather are tightly joined, yet are pliable enough to allow the leather to mould to your feet and breathe.”

Oliver Dorfer “The PulpitProject”

Oliver Dorfer’s “The PulpitProject” opens today at New York’s Freight + Volume. The exhibited work will remain on view until February 21, 2009 at the gallery, located 542 West 24th Street, New York, NY.

This is a first New York outing for the young Austrian Dorfer, and the works he is showing come from his ongoing “pulpproject” series, so named for his source material drawn from the pages of comic books and other cheap publications. Subjecting them to collaged and Photoshopped mutation, Dorfer then paints them on the reverse side of large sheets of Plexiglas. The remarkable results, super-smooth and more than six feet square in the full-scale pieces, meld the appearances of Pop art, shop windows, and medieval woodcuts. It makes for an unsettling mix. Conference of Birds second collection arrives for Spring/Summer 2009. As Fashionisto writes, “The label named after the 12th-century poem by Farid ud-Din Attar has found its stride in business casual. The spring collection features neutral colored pieces highlighted by the use of sun-kissed hues reminiscent of a desert sunset.” Layered cuts and warm color hues make Conference of Birds an appealing option in menswear.

Alain Mikli Gold-Horn Eyeglasses

Eyewear designer, Alain Mikli, has created a line of new eyewear for the gentleman who’s budget is still wide open. As they put it, “Even in the midst of economic crisis… with elegance and provocation, Mikli makes a statement that now is the time for businessmen to make a safe investment that will last a lifetime.”

That investment  is a pair of eyeglass frames made from 18-carat pink or 14-carat yellow gold. “The water-buffalo horn was selected carefully, cut into sheets, shaped and polished to create a smooth exterior.”

They’re only available through Alain Mikli’s two New York City boutiques and come in at a 8600$US, giving the recession the big ole middle finger.

Some Things Just Need A Redesign

objects need redesign front Some Things Just Need A Redesign

Jessica Helfand’s “Ten Things That Need Redesigning” from Design Observer offers a rather amusing take on some items that could use sprucing up. Favorites include children’s ski jackets (why are they so ugly) and the State of New Jersey. Helfand’s approach might be a bit tongue-in-cheek, but the objects suggested are spot on.
