PSFK reports on the latest in pop-up retail from Pantone. Following up on their successful outing with Uniqlo, Pantone has teamed with Gap on a Pop-Up shop adjacent to Gap’s flagship at 54th and 5th in NYC.  Pantone has also issued a t-shirt in Mimosa (14-0848), Pantone’s 2009 color of the year. “Pantone describes the color as having seven characteristics, optimistic, hopeful, reassuring, warm, cheerful, radiant, and versatile which they feel are the most relevant to the next twelve months.” Mimosa is not the only hue available through Gap, though the Mimosa color t-shirt will be exclusive to the pop-up shop, which is open through February 8th.

Art Institute of Chicago Expansion

I love a (good) museum expansion project. Over the past few years, Renzo Piano envisioned my absolute favorite, the expansion at the Morgan Library, and begun work on an expansion to the Art Institute of Chicago. The new building creates space for the contemporary art collection, temporary exhibitions and all important educational facilities. May is proposed for the opening.

Christopher Wool, Art Edition

13 January 2009, 19.14 | Posted in Art, Books & Magazines | No comments »

wool book front Christopher Wool, Art Edition

One of the latest art edition monographs from Taschen celebrates and dissects the work of Christopher Wool. Owing much to the abstract expressionists and pop artists that proceeded him, Wool’s work pushes beyond those “isms” to further question the role and possibility of painting. Taschen’s art edition comes signed by Wool and includes original art and photographs. A little more on the book -

Exploring Wool’s work in close to 500 pages, this monograph is exhaustive in its scope and depth. All work phases are covered in large-scale reproductions and accompanied by production Polaroids and installation photos by Wool himself. Editor Hans Werner Holzwarth has previously collaborated on several catalogs and artist’s books with Wool. Essays and analyses by Glenn O’Brien, Jim Lewis, Ann Goldstein, Anne Pontégnie, Richard Hell, and Eric Banks make this book a great read as well as a definitive study of the story so far.

Like most of the Art Editions from Taschen, the book will set you back a touch more than the average coffee table ornament.

Customizable Fiberglass Chair

inmod fiberglass shell chair front Customizable Fiberglass Chair

Inmod takes the ID model and applies it to an Eames style fiberglass chair. The options are pretty limited – you get a few colors, three types of leg and a few different finishes for those legs – but, in the end, you can call it your own. Will this revolutionize the way furniture is sold? Probably not, given that when you upholster a chair, you are pretty much customizing it. Fun idea nonetheless. (Via SixDifferentWays).

Stansfield Reversible Shirt

stansfield reversible jacket Stansfield Reversible Shirt

This Stansfield reversible shirt could easily be classified as a jacket – it has a zip instead of buttons and has lining, so it can be worn over something else as an outer layer or spring jacket. It’s also one of those rare reversible items that looks like the designer has made sure that it looks great whichever way you decide to wear it. Get it from Oki-Ni.

Jil Sander Jacquard Jacket

The vintage blazer craze is one that’s been gathering steam for a while but we can’t stand the musty smell and overpricing (considering that it’s essentially just second hand). This Jil Sander blazer will fill your casual blazer needs, although it looks like the sleeves will need shortening. The styling on Browns is a little too formal for our tastes, so we’ve used the styling picture from a similar jacket on Tres Bien. Get the jacket from Browns.
