She’s not the only person to work an unsavory review of Dubai, but Germaine Greer is the latest. Her thoughts appear in today’s Guardian and have prompted some rather amusing responses. A synopsis of Greer’s assessment below.

From its artificial islands to its boring new skycraper, Dubai’s architecture is beyond crass.

We like the new Parachute Jacket from Martin Margiela’s Spring/Summer 2009 Collection. A proven classic comes with the smart detailing from the designer. The large zip front pockets are looking very nice. The choice of materials was also well done – the outer shell is made from heavy nylon gaberdine and the jacket’s lined in cotton.

There’s been a huge growth in the amount of pocket squares lately, with buyers clearly seeing this as an ‘investment’ piece this spring. Paul Smith is the latest designer to start making more pocket squares, with a gingham and striped version available. Linda Farrow’s collections seem to be forever expanding, with their vintage, fine jewellery and now their luxe range. As you’d expect with the Luxe range, materials are of the highest order. The glasses are handmade and  made of titanium metal coated in 24 carat gold. The grey glasses (pictured top left) also use white gold.

Givenchy’s SS09 collection dropped in stores recently and these desert boots look to be the stand out of the new arrivals. There hasn’t been a shortage of desert boots lately, so Givenchy are looking to differentiate their boots by being made out of goatskin and adding some heel support – a well needed feature in desert boots. Something about this image sums up how The North Face can be worked and fashion to work for any looks. For a product founded for the difficult “north face terrains” of northern hemisphere mountains, they seem to fit perfectly in low altitude conditions. From their pop-up store with the Gap to their eyewear collection, Pantone is moving quickly in branding their colors out into world of fashion. ”With the creation of the 09/63, SeaVees celebrates the founding of Pantone and the release of the first PANTONE MATCHING SYSTEM. For the first time in their 45 year history and through an exclusive agreement, Pantone has allowed an external design team into their hallowed archives. SeaVees cofounders Steven Tiller and Derek Galkin selected seven vintage colors from the original Pantone color guide. The palette, chosen from the only authentic guide known to exist, epitomizes the cool, casual style of California in 1963.”

Maine Maritime Museum, located in Bath, has recently opened The Sea Within Us: Iconically Maritime in Fashion & Design. From 19th-century naval uniforms to the children’s apparel they have inspired, the exhibition tackles a full range of sea inspired looks. Ephemera and, of course, tattoos are also represented. Rogues Gallery is one of the sponsors. Take a trip up to Maine before April 19, 2009 to check it out. The museum is pretty special without the fashion tie in.

The good people at The Fashionisto sat down with designer, Joe Haller for some insight into Nice Collective’s Spring 2009 Collection entitled, “Voix de Ville.” When asked about the “ruggedness” of the collection, Mr. Haller said, “If there’s a rugged sensibility to the collection, it wasn’t a conscious or contrived decision on our part, but rather a byproduct of the season’s theme, “Voix de Ville.” We were thinking about a Vaudeville / traveler / carny aesthetic that lead to a rugged and slightly dark overtone and honestly, we’re thrilled by the results.”
