Roughly ten days ago we noted the hailing of the $1 bill as a design classic. One that needed no re-conception, and would likely be immune from change. Designer Richard Smith thinks otherwise. His redesign program is hinged on the belief that a new look for currency can help lift the economy. Changing the look of US notes would work in step with a larger national rebranding scheme. Smith has come up with his own look, and wants the public to chime in with their own designs on his blog as well. (via DB).
A few more looks from Smith after the jump.

How dare he! Shouldn’t this be assigned to Shepard Fairey.
Looks cool, but still fails to address the fact that blind people need to use cash too. (At least as far as I can tell… There might be braille or something, but I didn’t notice that in the description.)
those look like windows media player animations! yuck. not into that.
Hmm.. pretty to look at, but they seem to be lacking an element of heritage /tradition and american identity. Not to mention a cohesive color scheme. Could be a trendy thai restaurant menu.
in addition to tom\’s comment about making currency accessible to the blind, the legibility of the thin sans serifs on top of the curvilinear designs in the examples above are quite problematic.
I completely agree that we\’re due for a redesign, but these look like gift certificates.
Absolutely essential—>rebrand america so we are no longer trashy, self-righteous, and unoriginal. Perfect solution to a globalized world, plus its trendy on a much more intelligent level.
I think they just look like some Microsoft template and that’s really the last thing America needs associated with it’s monetary system. Plus (and this might be a good thing) it takes away the ability for people to refer to $100 notes as Benjamins, but this also means that those who are less educated lose the daily visual reminded of the nation’s founding fathers.
I think we’re due for a change, but not one that’s so generic looking …. that’s just too American
Esse design ‘revolucionário’ é simplesmente HORRÍVEL. Isso parece muito mais como panfletos de propaganda barata do que cédulas de dólar. Eu sentiria vergonha pelos americanos por utilizar um dinheiro tão feio assim!
