Orlebar Brown ‘Setter’ Swim Short

orlebar brown shorts 01 Orlebar Brown Setter Swim Short

These shorts aren’t for everyone. We thought we’d get there before anyone else did. The ’setter’ shorts are the shortest of Orlebar Brown’s short collection, but we think that – assuming you can pull it off – they’ll look the best at the pool. We repeat, at the pool. There’s nothing more obscene than a man walking around town in ridiculously short shorts.

Orlebar Brown are a refreshingly old school company that have received a new school lick of paint. This much is obvious from the fact that they’ve got testimonials on their site when people stopped believing online testimonials ages ago. They’ve also collaborated with Monocle in the past, so if it’s good enough for the multi-accented one, it’s good enough for you. You can get this from The Shop at Bluebird or their website.

Fabien Baron Aviator Sunglasses

fabien baron sunglasses 01 Fabien Baron Aviator Sunglasses

In between his frequent sessions of musical chairs with Glenn O’Brien, Fabien Baron has found the time to design these aviator sunglasses. They come in matte black and gold metal frames and are handmade in Japan.

While these are interesting, we’d have a hard time recommending these over a pair of Ray-bans. In fact, we’d go as far as to say that these are aimed at those who feel that wearing certain brands somehow makes them a better person (so that’s 90% of rappers then). However, if you’re dying to get a piece of Baron, this is the way to go. (Browns)

Take a hop and skip to see the matte black version.

nyt all american NYT | The All American Back From Japan

David Colman writes a piece up for NYT on the trend of “Americana” in Japan making it’s way back to – where else – the USA. “Lately the trend has taken on a new dimension, via the Internet, with a resurgence of interest in once obscure American brands. Alongside the familiar L. L. Bean duck boots, Brooks Brothers shirts and Ray-Ban Wayfarers…As fashion moments go, this is as all-American as it gets, right? Actually, no.”

“Made to Measure” Board Shorts at Am. Rag Tonight

katin men style apolis activism Made to Measure Board Shorts at Am. Rag Tonight

This is a trip. Our friends at men.style report in on a one night only board short event. “The secret to great surf trunks? A little old Japanese lady, of course. In 1961, Sato Hughes … started as a seamstress at Huntington Beach’s Katin Surf Shop, later inheriting the company; her attention to detail and quality have helped make Katins a SoCal staple for the better part of five decades. To celebrate the brand’s 50th anniversary, Katin collaborator Apolis Activism is bringing the 84-year-old out of retirement for a one-night-only made-to-measure event tonight at L.A.’s American Rag.” How dope is that?

Creating the Modern Stage: Designs for Theater and Opera

theater design morgan Creating the Modern Stage: Designs for Theater and Opera

There is no questioning the depth and scope of The Morgan Library & Museum’s collection. Among the terrific holdings are some fascinating documents outlining the development of modern set design. 50 drawings from this portion of the collection make up Creating the Modern Stage, which over 4 sections reveals how modern technology led to new theories about the role of actor and stage set. Enriching the drawings are photographs, musical scores and more. Worth going even if you’re not into the theater, the building itself is a marvel.
