portland design works front Portland Design Works

Portland Design Works operates under a simple mission – “We develop beautiful, simple products for urban cycling.” Founded by two friends, Dan and Erik, the company is all about the friendly nature of city riding (i.e. anyone, in anything, at anytime) and giving it some lovely accutrament. Among the offerings are grips, tools, and inflation devices. Fenders made of recycled plastics and soft goods compliment the core product. (via Core 77).

Nigel Cabourn Autumn/Winter 2009 Postcards

nigel cabourn autumn 2009 02 Nigel Cabourn Autumn/Winter 2009 Postcards

Nigel Cabourn pieces have been dropping in Japanese stores already, but it’s nice to get a little backstory on the collection. Nigel Cabourn has made his latest lookbook in postcard form, describing the collection’s inspiration.

According to the postcards, the collection is inspired by English mountaineer George Mallory, who attempted to climb Mount Everest back in 1924 – back when it was actually a mammoth challenge and didn’t have every Tom, Chris and Cheryl climbing it – and the clothes he wore whilst doing it. The image above is Mallory’s actual clothes, which have stood the test of time (and mountain climbing) and prove the everlasting quality of the fabrics. Below the jump is a picture of his climbing partner Andrew Irvine’s parka, which included a detachable rucksack attached to the coat via the belt.

The rest of the postcards are available after the leap.

Church’s Spring/Summer 2010 Preview

churchs spring 2010 01 Churchs Spring/Summer 2010 Preview

The guys (and gal) at Buckstyle turn us onto Church’s SS10 collection, which they snapped during their trip to Milan fashion week. Our first reaction was how Trickers-esque these were, looking remarkably similar to the Junya Watanabe/Trickers SS09 collab. But Buck lets us know Church’s trump card – foam soles.

Now that the purists have finised spitting their coffee over their laptops, this is a functional addition – it adds grip and makes a usually heavyweight piece suitable for summer wear. Available in both brogue and buck form (the shoe not the site), the colours are a nice continuation of the lively colours used in their SS09 collection.

Take a look at the rest of the preview after the leap.

B Store Cuffed Shorts

b store cuffed shorts B Store Cuffed Shorts

Keen readers will have spotted that we’re quite the fans of B-Store’s SS09 collection. White shorts aren’t usually our cup of tea, but we do recommend these. Why? Firstly because they work well with those those navy shoes we’ve been seeing everywhere. And secondly, because they require a certain amount of panache to pull off, which we’d like to think that Selectism readers have. (Farfetch)

01. Mind Your Own Business | Consortiums NY Q&A

After telling friends that retail pro Andre Munoz had opened his store,Consortiums New York, on Delancey at Bowery, I believe the quip was, “is it a Jimmy Jazz franchise?” Lol guys, lol. Completely devoid of Nike boots, the vibe at Consortiums does hit an urban note, but think more Danceteria and less Club Cheetah.” (asilentflute)

02. San Francisco Signs Mandatory Recycling & Composting Laws

“Just yesterday On June 23rd, the City of San Francisco signed into effect the nation’s first law mandating that all residents and businesses separate their recycling and compost material from normal trash. While many other cities in the US require recycling, no other city requires separation of food scraps and foot material to becomposted. The measure, which will take effect this fall, is intended to help increase landfill diversion rates to 75% by 2010 as well as reduce greenhouse gas emissions.” (inhabitant)

03. Seoul’s comprehensive design makeover

“In preparation for their 2010 World Design Capital status, Seoul is undergoing an Olympic-sized design makeover headed up by industrial designer Chung Kyung-won. Chung is the Seoul Metropolitan Government’s chief design officer and an ID professor at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology.” (core77)

04. Absinthe by Couvet (above)

“Absinthe, in terms of history and experience, is a pretty nifty beverage. The goal was to create a brand that compares to the experience and easily appeals to the people and market who are currently buying it. It comes in three grades which reflect the percent of alcohol.” (packagingoftheworld)

Colette says it proper with their description of the Auricoste Naval Watches. “If you were to be told that Auricoste has been watch and clockmaker to the Navy, the Longitude Office Observatory, the Army Geographic Department and the National Arts and Professions establishment since 1854 – is there any need to add anything more about these authentic watches, available in Civil version for the very first time?” Large face chrono-beasts for the taking.

Paraboot moves the moccasin boot down to a low top which deserves a look for those in need of something other than a traditional deck shoe. The “Malibu’ shoe is finished in a taupe leather with a classic white non-slip sole. Throw on some thick leather laces and you have a proper shoe for rocking along side your denim or khakis. (chcm)
