As much as we love our functional designs, we do enjoy a quirky piece from time to time. Take this reading light for instance. Is it practical? no. Is it functional? not really. But it is fun. As mentioned before, Self Edge is about to opens doors on their new NYC location at 157 Orchard. The shop which will carry a slew of hard to find denim from Japan and beyond. It also happens to be a collaborative effort with the 3sixteen boys. “We have partnered with Kiya Babzani of Self Edge San Francisco to open Self Edge New York, which will carry the entire 3sixteen collection every season, as well as product manufactured in small numbers exclusively for the store. SENY will become 3sixteen’s marquee retailer in New York.” Expect the same quality of customer service you find at Self Edge’s San Francisco location in NYC with a few surprises…

While you may not be thinking of knitwear for Spring, Folk knows how the weather can be in England during those months. For this reason, they offer some fairly heavy knitwear sweater to keep you bundled when necessary. Shawl collars and heavy weaves makes these sweaters charmers in our book.

Creative Rec has released some looks from their Spring 2010 line.  Forthcoming looks from their main line have strong details and inspirations from their “Italian” line. Smooth lines and muted undertones are the focus on many of these forthcoming styles. Charleston’s Ben Silver stocks a remarkable array of Prep School, and University, crested blazer buttons and cufflinks. The collection at base is built off a 24kt plated button with the logo of chosen school applied in French cloisonne enamel. Custom orders allow any buyer the choice of other precious metals.

Celebrate your school or just fake it (either way the blazer buttons may help you get in a WASP’s pants).

Lars Stoten gave us a quick preview of the Mjolk Footwear collection for Spring 2010. The footwear is made in Italy and required pulling some craftsman out of retirement to accomplish (more on that later). The finished product is clearly some of the most refined looks we viewed during (capsule) NY. The burgundy wine finished leather oxfords shine strong on display or on your feet.

On Thursday, July 23, 2009, Eldred’s Auction Gallery (in East Dennis, MA) hosts its annual Marine auction. Also included a selected pieces of Chinese Export. Among the highlights is a selection of ephemera from the S.S. President Harrison of the Dollar Steamship Line, circa 1930 (shown above). A lovely reverse painted glass sign from the Chatham Coast Guard and a number of whaling related pieces will hit the block too. (via Curated).

Buckler gave us a sneak peek at their line of swim trunks for Spring 2010 during (capsule) NY . Not to be confused as men’s undergarments, these shorts take the same old style and flip it adding smooth undertones and serious style. But if thats a little too revealing Buckler also has board short with just as much bite. – cw

We always like to keep our eyes on what the guys over at Tanner Goods are putting together, and after looking at some of their latest pieces we can definitely say these guys keep producing goodness. Specializing in everything from bags to belts, wallets, and lanyards Tanner create unique pieces with a true army surplus feel. And in a world where most companies are outsourcing to save a buck, Tanner are still keeping it real. Each order is hand made by the design team in the their Portland based workshop and crafted using techiniques that have been handed down through the generations to create a product that will stand the test of time. -cw
