Live All You Can: Alexander Joy Cartwright and the Invention of Modern Baseball

selectism - Live All You Can

Giving the notion that Abner Doubleday established modern baseball, Jay Martin’s Live All You Can Live All You Can: Alexander Joy Cartwright and the Invention of Modern Baseball presents the case for entrepreneur A.J. Cartwright as major catalyst for the games spread in the late 19th-century. Pulling together letters and papers, Martin shows how Cartwright built a formalized set of rules for the game and how he appealed to spectators across class lines. Of course, there is also time to revisit the controversy between Doubleday and Cartwright.

Selectism Feature | Marco Cairns, The Duffer of St. George

With The Duffer of St. George celebrating 25 years, Glenn Kitson catches up with founder Marco Cairns.

Camden, North London, 1984. A group of friends begin an enterprise that would eventually lead them to starting the UK’s first streetwear label. The Duffer of St. George was conceived as a way to get off the dole, make a bit of cash to bankroll a bit of clubbing and enjoy a period in early 1980s London when you could still have access to a manufacturing base that would knock up some limited runs of t-shirts, jackets or trousers and still not break the bank.

Selectism - The Sartorialist Book By Scott Schuman

William Yan points us at the some news. The Sartorialist shows up with some new images of his forthcoming photos book, “The Sartorialist.” It’s a labor of love for this street photographer who has happily documented the moving world of fashion from New York to Paris and beyond. “This has been a labor of love. Taking the pictures, editing the pictures, arranging the pictures, doing most of the writing while I was still in Phoenix after my Dad died. It’s hard to put into words how one feels looking at their own work presented like this – so I won’t even try.”

The “Bespoke Edition” is available now from Amazon The Sartorialist Book By Scott Schuman.

BBB | Floris Van Bommel Spring/Summer 2010

selectism - floris-van-bommel-spring-2010-01

What, you thought we were done with Bread and Butter? Actually we were, we just found these pictures down the back of our metaphorical couch (by that we mean, on a USB stick).

Floris Van Bommel are a Dutch brand with a factory in Germany and a flagship in Belgium. They have a few separate lines, including ‘Van Bommel’, which focuses on traditional shoes. The ‘Floris Van Bommel’ line is the more fashion forward line and it features chelsea boots, burnished suede shoes (as seen above) and desert boots in an array of colours.

Take a look at further pictures after the leap.

Timberland Deck Boots

selectism - timberland-boots

As much as love that Timberland’s making a comeback, we’re not ready to hop on that bandwagon yet. It might be that we remember a deluge of pregnant 15 year-olds in hot pink ones or folks wearing them to clubs as dress wear, but we still can’t shake off our mental associations.

Right now we’re much more partial to this pair of deck boots. Deck boots have been an emerging style lately, but these are sturdy, hard-wearing and they’ll look a little bit cooler the timb’s work boot. Isn’t that what we all want really? (Herring Shoes)

Style Salvage | Carolyn Massey Spring/Summer 2010

selectism - carolyn-massey-spring-2010-01

We’re more than a little jealous of Style Salvage, who got to rummage around Carolyn Massey’s studio last week. They got a thorough look at the SS10 collection, which has a mountaineering influence. While we loved all the pieces shown, we took a special shine to the ‘paracoat’, which we think is reminiscent of a coat that Andrew Irvine wore.

While everyone loves Scandinavian fashion, half the reason there’s so many young labels out there doing well is because stores aren’t afraid to take a risk and stock them in stores. We’re a little shocked that a collection like Massey’s is only available at ASOS and Daniel Jenkins (who does a great job in stocking labels that many stores won’t). Hopefully that’s something that’ll change in the future.

Take a gander at more pictures after the leap.
