Oliver Spencer Shawl Collar Cardigans

31 July 2009, 10.30 | Posted in Fashion | No comments »

selectism - oliver-spencer-striped-shawl-collar-cardigan

If there’s anything you can learn from this post, it’s that we’re a sucker for a shawl. There’s no shortage of shawl collars out this season (now that we’re officially in AW09, according to the slightly barmy fashion gods) but a good one will always catch our eye.

This Oliver Spencer cardigan is lightweight enough to wear during a chilly summer’s day (i.e. all summer days in London) and even has a nice breast pocket – althoughwe doubt it’ll be able to hold anything substantial. It’s also on sale  – isn’t everything right now? – and comes in at £67.50 (down from £135). (Oliver Spencer)

“As we told you this past fall (and again, later), Radiohead’s Ed O’Brien and Philip Selway rejoined ex-Crowded Housed Neil Finn for part two of his 7 Worlds Collide project. The inaugural project, recorded back in 2001, included O’Brien and Selway along with Eddie Vedder, Johnny Marr, Lisa Germano, Soul Coughing’s Sebastian Steinberg, and Neil’s son Liam. As you can note by reading the wordy headline above…” (stereogum)

04. Current Reading: M/M (Paris) Inventory/Inventaire 2: Haunch Of Venison

“M/M (Paris) Inventory/Inventaire 2 is the updated version of the out of print Haunch of Venison publication that offers an over view of the work of that vital design team. The 80 additional pages features M/M’( Paris)’s post 2006 work . Inventory 2 was published on the occasion of the 2008 exhibit at the Drawing Center in New York City. I need not say that this book is vital, vital, vital!” (theimagist)

Workerman Wooden Handlebars

Selectism - Workerman Wooden Handlebars

Would you buy handlebars that cannot handle your weight? What if they looked good enough for display art. Workerman suggests the latter with their wooden handlebar ensemble. “Workerman wooden handlebars are all handcrafted in Minneapolis, MN out of select hardwoods. This means no two bars will ever be the same, ensuring that what you are displaying on your bike is a one of a kind work of art. Because these are not your typical handlebars, a certain amount of care and caution must be used. These handlebars are not intended for full weight support or to be ridden with. They are only intended to be used as an aesthetic improvement or for display purposes only.” Seriously, display use only. (jspear)

Selectism - Quiksilver Vending Machines at The Standard Hotel

WWD brings some first looks at the new Quiksilver Boardshorts for The Standard Hotel which are sold through the age old favorite, the vending machine. “The boardshorts and bikini will be distributed via poolside vending machines in the hotel’s four properties, in their boutiques and online at shopthestandard.com…There are four men’s designs in the first batch of boardshorts, which harken back to the fits and looks of Seventies and Eighties styles. Each one is inspired by The Standard’s four locations in downtown Los Angeles, Hollywood, Miami and New York. The $75 boardshorts are made in Quiksilver’s ultralightweight, “diamond dobby” stretch material, which prevents rashes, with a retro scalloped leg and packaged in a waterproof travel bag.”

The Rapha Condor Professional Cycling Team has announced the addition of the Paul Smith family as one of their new premier sponsors.” The name which emerges as important to our site is the Paul Smith Jeans entry to cycling. “Sir Paul is a well known cycling enthusiast and has worked with Rapha on a number of cycling related projects in recent years. Selectism - Japanese Paper Clips

Ben was right. RSVP in Berlin is one of those shops you have to experience if only to try and figure out how they can survive on selling high end stationary goods. Well, high end may not be the best term. Let’s use premium. RSVP is an OCD lover’s delight – the small shop’s goods are placed with thought out attention to display. When you pick something up, you want to put it back exactly as you found it. The gem in the shop? Japanese paper clips of various forms.

Choose between nickel plated and true 18carat gold clips all well priced  - 10 18carat clips will run you around 7euros.

Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame and Regional History Museum

selectism - Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame and Regional History Museum

Since I’m gearing up to give an exciting presentation at this years American Association of State and Local History annual meeting, news of new regional history museum buildings hits a nail on the head. Add to that a strong affection for a good Hall of Fame (I once flirted with the idea of joining the team at the Tennis Hall of Fame) and the Louisiana State Sports Hall of Fame and Regional History Museum really gets the blood flowing. Combining two institutions in one is great… as done very well in Kansas City where the Jazz Hall and Negro Leagues Baseball Museum share a space.

The Louisiana State Sports Hall of Fame and Regional History Museum will open its doors in fall of 2011. Trahan Architects handled the design. More info at ArchDaily.

Selectism - Burkman Brothers Spring/Summer 2010 Looks

ACL drops in on Burkman Brothers for a preview look at their forthcoming Burkman Brothers Spring/Summer 2010 collection. “The new offerings for fall are of a similar vein to what was presented for SS09 and this past fall winter collection. The line is a strong mix of colorful wovens paired with khaki and twill pants, not to mention light madras outwear and a small selection of knits. At first glance the collection doesn’t seem very different from what is out there, but when you get up close the devil really is in the details.”
