Alden ‘Indy’ Boot

21 August 2009, 13.30 | Posted in Shoes | 4 comments »

selectism - alden-indy-boots-01

Blackbird have got their mitts on Alden’s ‘Indy’ boot, which was an inspiration for one of A.P.C’s AW09 shoes that we featured a while back. We know it’s all the rage on the ‘intanetz’ to pretend as if you’ve been up on something since it began, but we’ll be the first to admit we didn’t previously know why this Alden boot was called the Indy.

According to Blackbird, the boot was originally named the ‘High Work Shoe’ and has been about since the 1930’s. The name change happened when Harrison Ford started wearing them in Indiana Jones films. Feel free to bore anyone you know with that information when you get your hands on these. (Blackbird)

Take the leap of faith to see more pictures.

YMC Bow Tie Chambray Shirt

21 August 2009, 10.30 | Posted in Fashion | No comments »

selectism - ymc-bowtie-chambray-shirt-01

What’s with high street retailers spelling chambray with an e? It’s not technically wrong, but the only folks who seem to do it are Topman and ASOS. It’s almost as annoying as people referring to companies in the singular instead of plural.

Remember bow ties? They were supposed to be the next big thing in neckwear, but they’ve ended up as one of those niche trends. If you’re a bow-tie wearer who’s managed to pull them off without looking affected, then you’ll like this YMC chambray shirt complete with attached bow tie. Our only complaint is that the bow tie itself looks a little too perfect. How are we gonna pretend we did it ourselves when it’s done up like that? (ASOS)

The song remains the same, detailed shots after that leap of faith.

Graphic Europe

selectism - graphic europe

Graphic Europe is a forthcoming travel guide from the folks at Studio April. Given that people in creative fields often have leads on some of the more intriguing establishments in any given city, it should be no surprise that the book unearths some entertaining options. Each city is covered by a local designer. This gives both the content and the graphic identity unique and distinctive character.

In all, 31 cities are given “alternative guides” in Graphic Europe. The book will release in October through Cicada Books. A welcome change of pace from the canned vision of Lonely Planet. (via Curated).

A few sample pages after the jump.

Selectism - No.Zine

01. Beachclub / Spanjers Architect

“On the beach of Westkapelle, a small coastal town in the Netherlands, recently a new beachclub called ‘Zuiderduin’ has opened its doors for the public. A building with a maximum outdoor floor surface where people can enjoy a snack, a drink and a beautiful view on the beach and the North Sea, when they go to the coast during the warm and sunny days. This is the starting point on which the concept of the design has been based.” (archdaily)

02. No.Zine (above)

“Patrick Fry recently completed a new project called ‘No.Zine‘. It is a self initiated series of zines featuring a collection of young artists, writers, illustrators, photographers and designers. The idea is that each of the zine’s content is based around the number of its issue. So really it’s a celebration of the power in numbers and how everything around us can relate to them.” (typeneu)

03. Bentley Mulsanne at Pebble Beach

“The reason for my trip to Pebble Beach was the launch of a brand new Bentley, the new Mulsanne. The first glimpse we had of it was on Saturday evening, at a private event for customers (not me) and press (hello) on the grounds of Clint Eastwood’s golf club, Tehama. A spectacular setting to say the least, but also an intimate way to showcase a car (we could not take pictures on that night though…). Much dancing was had, dangerously close to a one-off pre-production car…” (arkitip)

04. New Atlas Sound: “Attic Lights

“Atlas Sound, the solo project from Deerhunter frontman Bradford Cox, will release his new LP Logos on October 20 via Kranky in the U.S. (It’s out Octobert 19 via 4AD in the UK.)” (pitchfork)

Selectism - NYT | L.L. Bean Signature Line

Eric Wilson writes in today’s NYT’s regarding a change in market of sorts for Maine’s L.L. Bean Company. “It now happens that L. L. Bean, like other outdoor companies, is planning an updated look with a collection called L. L. Bean Signature. The company has hired a name designer, Alex Carleton, the founder of Rogues Gallery, as its creative director. In March, it will introduce the line, including tailored linen blazers and buffalo plaid shirts for men and camp jackets and a madras shirtdress for women.” We’re looking forward to see what Mr. Carleton brings to the market with “Signature.” More to come…

selectism - De'Loghi Artista Series

Coffee and art has some subtle (and some overt) connections. De’Longhi is well known for making equisite coffee machines. There artista series brings this heritage together with contemporary art. And, it’s not all just for show.

Contributions from Nicole Miller, Damien Correll, and Kristina Collantes (and several others), have been laser etched onto a limited run of Perfecta machines. These will be offered online with all proceeds going to Oxfam USA. They also suggest raising a double espresso to the fight against poverty.
