Happy People Spring/Summer 2010 Preview

20 August 2009, 19.00 | Posted in Fashion | No comments »

Selectism - Happy People Spring/Summer 2010 Preview

Happy People began as a small shop in Lulea Sweden, where all good menswear is pouring from these days. But being from the Northland gives the Happy People brand a flavor of the lapland world not found in most wears. Their debut menswear collection is coming for Spring/Summer 2010 and is inspired by “Gipsys, Cowboys and the swedish movie, ‘The Hunter’.” Not having seen the movie, I can only go by what I see in the look book preview: well done simple menswear with baggy trousers reminiscent of farm wear and crew neck cardigans that look symmetrical and clean.

Selectism - Buzz Rickson's The Acme Thunderer Brass Whistle

Heritage junkies looking for a fresh new government issued brass whistle may now turn to Buzz Rickson’s signature model from England’s The Acme Company. The whistle is the same one used by the U.S. Army and Air Force as a “survival whistle.” Today it is a perfect accessory for a FWD or Dubwar event, or even some local hipster outing to the farm. #newrave

Peckham Rye London Store Opening

Selectism - Peckham Rye Shop

We love all the pop-up stores that have been, um, popping up lately, but we prefer things more permanent. A lot of pop-up stores open halfway through the month (when working folks have the least money) and close at the end of the month, leading to a mad, annoying dash to find that the piece you wanted is all sold out. Not that we’re speaking from experience.

That’s why we’re glad to hear about a more permanent home for Peckham Rye. The accessories expert have set up home in a road just off Carnaby Street in London. Best thing about the place? It’ll still be there on payday. 11 Newburgh Street, Carnaby, London.

Gitman Brothers Vintage for Context

selectism - gitman-vintage-for-context-01

Don’t call it a comeback. Gitman Brothers haven’t gone away since the 70’s, it’s just taken that long for us silly blogs to give them their due props. Their vintage range has been bubbling for a few seasons and now they’re branching out, doing exclusive colllections with prize retailers. While we like the super-duper limited production thing that they’ve been doing for some of their collabs, it’s nice to see something you can actually get hold of.

The range doesn’t fall in love with any particular shirt style, darting from oxfords to stripes to plaids and flannels. Plaid ties also make an appearance, they’ll be perfect for those who want to add flair by doubling up on plaids. The full collection is exclusively available at Context.

More shots of the collection after the leap.

Acne Pampas Cardigan

selectism - acne-pampas-knit

The tail-end of August offers up some interesting wardrobe dilemmas. Namely, do you bring out the knits and boil or do you go for one layer and freeze? If you’re like us, you’ll do the former.

That’s why we’re recommending this Acne ‘Pampas’ knit, which the description says has a ‘South American feel’. We’re assuming they mean it feels like the Alpaca knits that certain areas of South America are known for – but their description could just mean that Ronaldinho touched a few of them in the factory. Alexander McQueen Olive Belt

selectism - alexander-mcqueen-belt

Sometimes we don’t have a lot to say about an item. This is one of those times. What do you say about an piece like this? It’s a belt. A very nice belt, but just a belt nonetheless. You wear it around your waist to keep your trousers up and add some colour to an outfit. That’s all there is to it. (Matches)

Selectism - New A Place To Bury Strangers - "In Your Heart"

01. Wiesmann to unveil limited production MF5 Roadster in Frankfurt

“With the international auto show rolling in to Frankfurt only once every other year, you can bet that Germany’s automakers will be there in full force to show off their latest wares. And in between the new Porsches and BMWs, niche automaker Wiesmann will also be showcasing its new limited production MF5 Roadster.” (autoblog)

02. New A Place To Bury Strangers – “In Your Heart” (Stereogum Premiere) (above)

There is a very special place in my heart for this band. #awakening (stereogum)

03. Ratata – a Full Size Wooden Machine Gun

“Eleven pieces of wood in a wooden box. A blocks set, just a toy. Until we start to play with it. When we put the pieces together, it becomes a full size machine gun. People should play more, really play more. With eachother. Away from that computer, get outside! You don’t play with a gun, yet it looks friendly, with its smooth edges and a pleasant light color.” (likecool)

04. Starbucks Barista Teardown

“Over at iFixit they’ve got an interesting teardown of the Starbucks’ brew-it-yourself Barista Espresso Maker “to take the mystery out of these relatively simple steam machines.” Not enough mystery to start with? How about these others?” (core77)

Via Snella Autumn 2009

Selectism - Via Snella Autumn 2009

Fashionisto bring the word on the latest from Via Snella. We have been fans of this line since we first covered back some time ago. “This season, Via Snella takes a risk with a collection that is as light in mood as it is in weight. Fall and winter’s rich colors make an appearance in scholarly cardigans, but it is the collection’s lighter colors that distinguish themselves. Bathed in warmth, subtle hues of blue and orange decorate separates reminiscent of sleepwear. Accenting the softer dimension of menswear, the collection is easygoing, but still makes sure to cover its bases with Via Snella’s take on the necessary basics.”

N. Hoolywood Side Zip Boots

Selectism - N. Hoolywood Side Zip Boots

A pair of bangers from N. Hoolywood’s Side Zip Boots are fastened using strapping rather than laces. Less gothic than they are modern, the boots feature leather work that covers and protects the shoe in ways I have not seen before. Much wear will be needed to break them into a sinking look. Mr. Owens would be proud.

J. Lindeberg Footwear and Neckties for Autumn/Winter 2009

Selectism - J. Lindeberg Footwear and Neckties for Autumn/Winter 2009

We previewed the men’s J. Lindeberg collection for Autumn 2009 yesterday. Today we look at two pair of shoes which accompany the looks. A pair of suede lows and leather boots remain simple but clearly show the quality level that we expect from the line.  For fun, we’re also previewing a few neckties from the collection. The color table remains in the grey and black zones, which sits fine with us.
