Rodolphe Paninaro Diver Chrono Watch

Selectism - Rodolphe Paninaro Diver Chrono Watch

From Luxist comes a look at the latest Rodolphe Paninaro Diver Chrono Watch. “new diver styled watch will be released from watch maker Rodolphe. The timepiece is nice, but notice that I mention diver “style” watch. A true diver watch is water resistant to 300 meters, while you don’t really want to submerge anything in water that is tested less than 100 meters water resistant. However the Paninaro Diver Chrono watch is only 50 meters water resistant. So enough to watch your hands a bit more, but I’d rather Rodolphe have called it the ‘Paninaro Wading Chrono.’” The white band is a solid look on this model. Super.

Furs and Frontiers in the Far North

selectism - Furs and Frontiers in the Far North

The fur trade is a fascinating piece of American history. Award winning author John Bockstoce provides a comprehensive view of the maritime and arctic portion of the trade in his new book Furs and Frontiers in the Far North Furs and Frontiers in the Far North . The book is published by Yale University Press.

Bockstoce himself is a fascinating guy. An independent scholar, his research has focused heavily on the arctic and his process is akin to the 19th-century explorers that spur him along. One of the many interesting characters I met while working at the Whaling Museum.

Available now from Amazon Furs and Frontiers in the Far North .

Lavenham Spring/Summer 2010

Selectism - Lavenham Spring/Summer 2010

We give love to the companies that keep it close. Britian’s Lavenham is one of those companies that keeps their production inside the British Isles. It is an important element of their business, where compromise is not an option. “Lavenham is an English manufacturer of superior quality country clothing and horse rugs. The brand was founded in 1969 and made the first nylon quilted horse rug, closely followed by matching jackets and waistcoats for the rider. The name quickly spread and Lavenham established a reputation of quality and durability through its nylon quilted products.” Photography by Ross Trevail.

Oki-Ni’s New Faces Of Menswear

selectism - oki-ni-new-faces-of-menswear-01

(L-R: Odeur, Satyenkumar)

While news that the British Fashion Council is sponsoring menswear designers is promising, it’s actually getting their pieces into stores that’s been the problem. Oki-Ni look to remedy that problem by launching a new section, titled ‘New Faces of Menswear’.

The initiative unofficially kicked off with Mr. Hare – who makes the segsiest shoes out there – and Hederus, who both launched a few weeks ago. It’ll continue with Odeur and Satyenkumar launching at the end of the week. Satyenkumar’s been on the site for a few seasons now, but don’t let that dull your excitement. Finishing it all off will be Martine Rose, Christopher Shannon, Kling By Kling and Lou Dalton, who’ll all be launching within the next two months.

Take a leap to see further shots of the designers involved.

selectism - Fast Boy Cycles

I spied an example of Harlem-based Fast Boy Cycles in the window of Soho’s Patagonia store yesterday afternoon. They work under a basic premise – building custom frames to your likeness. Also available are custom racks, fenders and bars. While the website doesn’t provide a ton of information aside from who to contact for an order, it does have a number of pretty bikes.

Check some more out after the jump.

Il Bussetto Leather Zip Wallet

selectism - il-bussetto-leather-zip-wallet-01

Zip wallets are hot right now. CDG have been doing them for eons, Albam started doing some and now Il Bussetto – who’s name sounds like an Italian Busta Rhymes – have got in on the act.

The main – and by main we mean only – thing differentiating this from the CDG and Albam wallets are the two external card holder slots. It wouldn’t help that much, but it’s enough to make it a worthwhile purchase if you’re on the fence about zip wallets in general. (Oi Polloi)

The song remains the same, detailed shots after the leap.

YMC Purple Sweatshirt

selectism - ymc-purple-sweatshirt-01

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again – the way fashion retail works is ridiculous. It’s a swelteringly hot 30 degrees in London right now (don’t laugh, this is incredibly hot for us) and all the stores are selling sweaters and coats. As any character in the Wire would say, ‘what part of the game is this?’

If you’re not in London right now or, bibleman forbid, in a place where it’s not hot, you’ll like the look of this YMC purple sweatshirt. We’re not in love with the V-neck detailing, but it’s not so bad that we’re ready to write off the whole piece. (End)

Detailed shots after that leap.

Selectism - Woodstock festival: 'We never realised that there were so many of us’

01. Woodstock festival: ‘We never realised that there were so many of us’ (above)

“Forty years ago this month, from 15 to 18 August 1969, a congregation just shy of half a million gathered in a field in Bethel, New York for a music festival the significance of which nobody could have anticipated. Billed simply as ‘Three days of Peace and Music’, Woodstock festival has come to encapsulate a mythic parting of the waves; the moment the American youth elected to alter the direction in which history was moving: “If you knew that the guy driving the train was out of his freaking mind,” said Arlo Guthrie “ you’d get off the train, wouldn’t you?” Photographer Henry Diltz presents his own images of the festival and recalls the personal stories behind his historic shots.” (telegraph)

02. Camper Bike – Pedal-Powered RV For One

“There’s a sense of freedom to be found in loading up your RV with all you need to survive and hitting the road to explore new places and commune with nature. This RV does it a little differently – as you’ll notice it’s completely human powered, about half the size of a normal cab-over camper, and it’s completely emission free. Designed by Boston-based artist Kevin Cyr, the Camper Bike is both a fully functioning RV and the subject of a number of Cyr’s amazing paintings.” (inhabitant)

03. Spring Break, the post card box set

Brosif, Stephen Schuster’s latest. “21 post cards total and printed in an edition of one hundred, these hot cakes are selling for $21. Please shoot me an email if you would like one.” (schuster)

04. Boston’s One Gallon Challenge hits the road this Thursday

“Up above is a shot of Roo Trimble, architecture metalworker and RISD ID graduate, and his self-welded aluminum car frame. Trimble is building the car to compete in the One Gallon Challenge, a competition to design, build and drive a vehicle from Greenfield, Massachusetts to Boston’s City Hall on a single gallon of gas.” (core77)

Griffin Mackintosh Smock Coat

Selectism - Griffin Mackintosh Smock Coat

I love camo more than I love Mackintosh. That’s not a very statement since they’re not really one to one comparisons, but when they come together in perfect unison at Griffin, it should not be denied review. Our brother site, Highsnobiety, gives us the lowdown. “UK brands Griffin and Mackintosh continue to work together this season. Previously we have seen them collaborate on Mackintosh’s signature item – the trenchcoat. This season they chose to do something new. The Smock Coat is more sporty and also more technical. The 100% waterproof hooded jacket, features adjustbale tabs around the neck, a fitted hood and comes in a British DPM camouflage look. The jacket is made in Scotland and available now.”
