Selectism - British Airways - Pen Knife

01. The Museum Of Broken Relationships

Museum of Broken Relationships A museum dedicated to broken hearts has been founded in Croatia. Authors of the concept Olinka Vištica and Drazen Grubišić decided to set up the museum after consoling friends over their failed romances.” (murketing)

02. Radiohead Rumor Mill Steaming Ahead, Threatening to Devour Entire Internet

“The most popular (and optimistic) theory at the moment puts forth the idea that “Twisted Words” is from a new Radiohead EP called Wall of Ice that will hit the internet super hard on Monday. (Via At Ease.) According to an anonymous tipster, the original leaked track was bundled with a geeked-out info file (check it out here) filled with ASCII art, nonsensical jargon, and a possible release date of August 17. The message ends with the words “Wall of Ice” made up of all “@” symbols. This could be a reference to an anti-entertainment industry cartoonthat likened the digital revolution to an unstoppable wall of ice set to crush any and all corporate interests (via CNET). Or it could not be.” (pitchfork)

04. South Africa World Cup 2010: Soccer City Stadium

“The 2010 World Cup to be held in South Africa is less than one year away. Being perhaps the most important international competition in sports in the world, we would like to start featuring some of the stadiums that will host this magnificient competition.” (archdaily)

Buzz Kill | In Search of a Beard Trimmer

Selectism - Buzz Kill | In Search of a Beard Trimmer

NYT “The Moment” writer,  Jonathan S. Paul, gets all up close and personal with a slew of beard trimmers. “Recently, my style-sourcing skills were put to the test when my beard trimmer, an old Panasonic, broke. I never loved it — the battery would tire out causing the blades to painfully tug at my whiskers. Something better, something chicer had to be out there. In my search for a new one, I quickly learned that electric-powered men’s grooming appliances are some of the least attractive items on the market. Call me fussy, but if I’m going to buy something I use several times a week (to keep my shadow paused at 5 o’clock), I’d like the thing to look good.”

Selectism - Creep Wool Creased Jacket

This blazer from Creep is perfect for guys like myself who hate to iron (the corner laundro does a much better job). “100% wool three-button blazer with soft, rumpled texture. With its casual exterior pockets and one-of-a-kind fabric, this slim suit jacket’s disheveled charm makes it easy to wear with the old shirt you picked up off the floor this morning.” (blackbird)

Roman Kremer for Mykita Spring/Summer 2010 Sunglasses

Selectism - Roman Kremer for Mykita Spring/Summer 2010 Sunglasses

Note: if you think these are a knockoff of the Kayne shutters, or even the Linda Farrows, check again. Roman Kremer takes risk in design and Mykita is willing bring them to market for that consumer who is willing to accept that risk. “The ROMAIN frame is cut out of 0.5 mm stainless steel and features metal  shutters. The design borrows cues from traditional Inuit eyewear, which was designed solely to provide protection from dazzling sunlight and did not have conventional lenses. The very graphic and square-edged frame is inspired by the collection’s leitmotiv of protection and is reminiscent of war face paint.”  Look for them in November.

Side Slope Loose Cardigan

selectism - side-slope-cardigan

Even though it’s still summer outside, we’ve offically entered autumn in our minds. Which is nice in theory, although not so great if you’re thinking about wearing a cardigan when it’s 26 degrees outside. The weird thing about fashion is the perpetual longing that people have. When it’s winter, people are dying for it to heat up and when it’s summer, people are dying for it to cool down. We’re no different, which is why we like this Side Slope cardigan. You couldn’t wear it now, but give it a couple of months and it’ll be a go-to piece. (Oki-Ni)

Pictorial Webster’s: A Visual Dictionary of Curiosities

selectism - Pictorial Webster's: A Visual Dictionary of Curiosities

In the summer of 1999 I was working at a publishing company, spending days flipping through their image archive to come up with ideas for a children’s picture dictionary. At one point, I submitted a picture of myself, swiftly dismissed on the grounds of “bad skin.”

Pictorial Webster’s: A Visual Dictionary of Curiosities Pictorial Websters: A Visual Dictionary of Curiosities doesn’t suffer that fate. Rather than work with a spotty faced youth, the book employs historic engravings from Webster’s Dictionaries of the 19th-century. The result is a fine reference point for artists, designers, and the generally curious.

Available now from Amazon Pictorial Websters: A Visual Dictionary of Curiosities .
