Yoshida Porter for Limoland Laptop/iPod Case

selectism - limoland-porter-spring-2010-laptop-ipod-case

So here it is, the last of the Limoland/Porter SS10 collection. We’ve espoused our opinions on Limoland’s love of the colours several times over now and, like most Limoland pieces, is a little marmite. We do like the shape of the cases, but we’re not so crazy about the blinding whiteness. It looks a bit too new, if you know what we mean. Thankfully, there’s an ipod case in a much calmer purple, which you can see after the leap.

selectism - design-code-orbit-maxi

If you read Selectism on a regular basis, you’ll know we’re all about the quirky design pieces. Give us a lamp that looks good and we’re happy – regardless of whether they work or not.  This design code lamp ticks all our boxes. It’ll add some quirk to any room, it comes in various colours and, most importantly, it’s pretty. It’s also at a reasonable price of 45 Euros. We couldn’t ask for more. (DesignCode)

Selectism - Wilcraft - Amphibious Ice Fishing and Hunting Vehicle

01. Radiohead’s Thom Yorke reveals reasons behind Harry Patch tribute song

“Writing on Deadairspace.com about the track, Yorke explained how he first became aware of Patch, adding that the he and bandmate Jonny Greenwood had recorded the tribute to him in an abbey shortly before his death.” (nme)

02. A Tribute to John Hughes

“You might not admit it, but deep down everyone loves a John Hughes movie or two, so it’s sad to hear of his passing, aged just 59.” (retrotogo)

03. Roll-Out Vegetable Mat Makes Gardening a Snap!

“Looking to grow your own vegetable garden but afraid you don’t have a green thumb? Chris Chapman’s Roll-Out Veg Mat could be just the solution you’re searching for. The corrugated cardboard mat is sowed with four types of vegetable seeds and organic fertilizer all ready to be rolled out – all you need to do is add water and soil. Chapman plans to create different mats for different seasons, keeping in step with changing growing cycles. Complete with fun graphics and instructions, Chapman’s design makes gardening much more approachable to budding green thumbs.”  (inhabitant)

04. Wilcraft – Amphibious Ice Fishing and Hunting Vehicle (above)

“The Wilcraft is a multi-seasonal amphibious vehicle designed for the ice fishing and to get you into those hard to reach hunting spots. The Wilcraft offers incredible stability on water, ice and land. It’s a light-weight vehicle, has a ground pressure equivalent to a person walking and it can float” #hardcore (likecool)

Field Notes Visit The French Paper Co.

Selectism - Field Notes Visit The French Paper Co.

Field Notes notebooks have garnered a great deal of press for their pocket friendly field notebooks. Though they clearly are not the only notebooks on the market, they do tend to communicate their story well, personalizing the relationship between the user, the notebook, and the notebook manufacturer. Their latest jump into giving you a personal view of their notebooks comes through this visit to the reknown French Paper Company Factory who make the 80 pound brown paper covers used on Field Notes. “French Paper, located on the St. Joseph River in Niles, Michigan, is a tiny mill by industry standards, but a big name in most designers’ hearts. French’s whole aesthetic (largely based on their long-standing relationship with CSA Design) and their always-up-to-date variety of papers and colors has made them very popular, and their environmental policies have brought them even more attention lately.”

Harvard Yard | Harvard’s Menswear Line

Selectism - Harvard Yard | Harvard's Menswear Line

This one came as a surprise to us. The mecca of academia is about to drop a menswear line. “Harvard Yard is a collaboration between Harvard University and private label tailored clothing manufacturer Wearwolf Group, which has licensed the name from the school to produce a contemporary men’s wear collection based on classic Ivy League style. The license, arranged by The Collegiate Licensing Co., not only highlights the growing relevance of classic American style, but also stands as perhaps the first time an American university has lent its name to a fashion-oriented collection of apparel.” (wwd)

Philadelphia and its Manufactures, 1859 & 2009: Photographs and Objects from Factories Here and Gone

06 August 2009, 21.49 | Posted in Art | No comments »

curated mag - Philadelphia and its Manufactures, 1859 & 2009

150 Years ago a little known book, Philadelphia and its Manufactures, was published. It surveyed the factories and livelihood of the city, bringing to life local industry (from textiles to brewing). Celebrating that history, and exploring the “now” of the factories, Art in the Age presents Philadelphia and its Manufactures, 1859 & 2009 – an exhibition of photographs and objects tying together past and present. Curated by local artist and archivist Jacob Hellman, the exhibition is designed to review the factories and critique current materialism. The photographs and objects go on view this Friday.

Support is provided by the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts. (via Curated).

Selectism - Sperry Spring/Summer 2010 Preview

More from Compass in Vegas. Today a few looks from the Sperry Spring/Summer 2010 collection. The boat/deck shoe movement continues to remain strong in the market. In some regard, it would seem that the economy may be laying a factor here as the trend remains locked on a footwear silhouette which is well priced and durable. At least the materials keep the style fresh and effective. Be sure to check the trainer in the mix as well.

Men’s Accessories Trend: Hold Everything

Selectism - Men's Accessories Trend: Hold Everything

This will come as no surprise to readers of Selectism. Men’s Bags are killing the accessories market at the moment. WWD reinforces this to their readers with a short piece on the matter. “For spring, designers are reintroducing backpacks and updating the weekender, both key components of a dynamic lifestyle. The backpacks fall into two camps: a high-tech, outdoor sport version that tends toward colorful nylon, or a bohemian, artisanal version in worn cotton canvas or leather. The new weekender appears in a variety of statement colors and leather treatments such as perforation, embossing and texturized effects.” Since Mismo is left off the list, we’ll show it above.
