Oliver Spencer ‘Ridley’ Navy Jacket

04 August 2009, 10.30 | Posted in Fashion | 3 comments »

selectism - oliver-spencer-ridley-jacket-01

While we love making random jibes about the preppy/workwear movement (say what you want, we still think ‘Take Ivy’ was a bit boring) there’s much to be admired in the trend as well. For instance, look at this Oliver Spencer jacket. It’s got all the poncey fashion details we like – the contrast buttons, the worn-in cotton – but it’s also got a detachable hood. And not just any old flimsy detachable hood, this one is made from the same sturdy material the rest of the jacket. Perfect for those windy, rainy summer days, so basically perfect for anyone in England or New York. (Oliver Spencer)

Selectism - All Points West in Photos

01. All Points West in Photos (above)

“When APW presented its inaugural festival last year, we weren’t alone in taking issue with the experience: lack of food options, a fair but generally recycled undercard which played more like ‘a bunch of bands opening for Radiohead,’ an extremely restricted/overpriced drink situation designed to keep people sober and make them feel uncomfortable by boozing in pens with views of zero stages but plenty of other people prioritizing beer over music…” (stereogum)

02. Mysterious Floating Campground Pops Up in Holland

“You may have heard of camping next to the water, but a band of guerrilla social engineers in Amsterdam have taken it to the next level – camping on the water. Literally. Our first thought? How the heck did they get that trailer onto that teeny tiny island nowhere near dry land? Read on to see the few facts that we do know about this mysterious spectacle.” (inhabitant)

03. Home Movies from Star Wars set

“Home movies from the crew at ILM during the making of Star Wars. Very cool and candid look at the team that brought so much innovation to film FX…” (notcot)

04. Meadow Brook Concours 2009: The Ferraris

“Summers in Michigan are little more than a series of car shows, with events ranging from the Woodward Dream Cruise to the Meadow Brook Concours d’Elegance. While we love Woodward’s tribute to American Muscle, only the Concours could deliver on genuine luxury exotics. And what supercar display would be complete without the father of all exotics, Ferrari.” (autoblog)

Selectism - Hyden Yoo Spring 2010

Fashionisto covers the Hyden Yoo Spring 2010 through excellent lookbook photography. Was it planned to be seen as early as this? Either way, we thank them ”Photography and creative team The Supervisory have jumped the gun and released Hyden Yoo’s lookbook for next spring. The lookbook features Ford model Joe Edney and showcases Yoo’s constant aesthetic that we have become accustomed to. A model example of American menswear today, Yoo offers a modest color palette, clean design, quality fabrics and impeccable workmanship at an affordable price.”

Selectism - ic! berlin & FREITAG Trucker Sunglasses

Freitag is not one to get dirty with too many collaborative projects but when the chance came to work with ic! berlin, how could they resists? Two sunglass models have come with their cooperative work – the Dirty Lyle and the Spide Mike, both of which are a tribute to “Sam Peckinpah’s 1978 truckin’ masterpiece ‘Convoy’ with Kris Kristofferson.” As The Spectacle Showcase puts it, “[They] help you spot that cop car when you’re driving into the sunset, it does a good job hiding your eyes and facial expressions from the nosy public if you’re famous, and it keeps the wind out of your eyes when you’re cycling”

Selectism - Hollander & Lexer Hits Williamsburg

R29 comes through with looks at the new Hollander & Lexer space in Brooklyn. “We’ve been fans of Hollander & Lexer ever since they set up shop a couple of years ago in Boerum Hill, hawking menswear from the likes of Rag & Bone and Robert Geller, but now the awesome men’s shop is expanding with a new store, just opened in Williamsburg. Just off of Wythe Street in an aging, castle-like space with neat, uncrowded racks of clothing.” Read the full feature at Refinery 29.

A few more looks after the jump.

Selectism - Kevin Krumnikl Audio Cabinet

A marvelous audio cabinet from designer Kevin Krumnikl. We can thank the folks at Yatzer for bringing Krumnikl to our attention. “Yatzer is always on the lookout for new talents and, why lie, we really feel a big satisfaction when we are the first to present designers that we are sure they will give a lot to talk about in the near future. That is the case of Kevin Krumnikl, one of those rare experiences of love at first sight! Krumnikl creations transmit you a warm feeling of familiarity without being boring and are full of numerous hidden details that make them special. They capture everybody’s attention without being flamboyant and pose an austerity that inspires…”

Selectism - Valet talks with J.Crew's Frank Muytjens

Our friends at Valet sat down with J.Crew’s Frank Muytjens for a nice conversation. “Last year, when Frank Muytjens was appointed as J.Crew’s Vice President of Men’s Design, the company was on the cusp of a cultural change. They had been updating their men’s line, improving quality and style but were hoping to elevate the brand during this renaissance of American menswear.”

Selectism - Sacai Autumn/Winter 2009

Openers presents us with looks from the Sacai Autumn/Winter 2009 collection. The collection clearly pulls from the trends being seen in Japan (especially in their print mags) and features layering on the legs as well as traditional knits tops. Not for everyone but a clear example of how our friends in the East are thinking.

Lodger Footwear Penny Loafer

03 August 2009, 16.40 | Posted in Shoes | No comments »

selectism - Lodger Footwear Penny Loafer

This month Lodger Footwear’s shoe of the month updates a classic – the penny loafer. Giving the traditional silhouette a more streamlined feel, Lodger has wrapped the traditional bar around to the back of the shoe, rather than finishing it at the vamp. The effect is subtle, but distinct. Additionally, the toe is less rounded than normal and the construction a touch more complicated.

More views of the Lodger Penny Loafer follow.
