Design Code ‘Bender’ Magazine Rack

03 August 2009, 15.30 | Posted in Design | No comments »

selectism - bender-magazine-rack-01

As you would have guessed from our magazine coverage, we’re avid magazine collectors. With this comes a need for two types of magazine rack. The first type is somewhere to stock all your ancient issues of The Face and Men’s Non-No (hopefully you read more than Monocle and i-D). This can be as ugly as you like – within reason. The second one is a display rack to go in your living room. This one needs to look good and before you ask, no, that rack from Ikea isn’t good enough.

That’s why we were glad to be turned onto this DesignCode magazine rack by Print fetish. It’s one sheet of metal, so it’s easily folded and assembled – no annoying allen keys to deal with – and at least one of the colours will suit someone’s home. At 68 Euros, it’s also at an affordable price. (DesignCode)

More pictures after that leap.

Tattoo Machine by Jeff Johson

selectism - Tattoo Machine by Jeff Johson

There are a few great books about tattoo shop life and its related social history out there. Most notably, Samuel Steward’s Bad Boys and Tough Tattoos Tattoo Machine by Jeff Johson, based on his experience in Chicago street shops during the mid-20th century. Jeff Johnson’s approach might be a touch different – he’s not scholarly as Steward – but the passed knowledge in his new book, Tattoo Machine Tattoo Machine by Jeff Johson, is no less engaging. Johnson has 18 years experience under his belt and is co-owner of Portland’s Sea Tramp Tattoo Shop. It’s safe to say, in his years, he’s seen a lot. And, in the books pages he revels in passing along the stories, lore, and a few basics that make tattooing one of the most amusing things to discuss and read about.

Out now, get it from Amazon Tattoo Machine by Jeff Johson.

Mjolk ‘Hackney Road’ Suede Shoe

We’re sticklers for detail. And so is Mjolk’s Lars Stoten, judging from his recent appearance on Fader TV – where he took the time to cut off the tiniest bit of thread from his jacket mid-interview. One of the things we’re obsessed with right now is a slim sole, and ,if this Mjolk shoe is anything to go by, designers are indulging us.

Mjolk have been using this shape for a while now, but this suede version is their best yet. The reasons we like these are threefold. 1) the shade of the suede, 2) the contrast sole and 3) the laces. (Revolve)

Detailed shots are (where else?) after the leap.

Folk ‘Wonder’ Belt

selectism - folk-wonder-belt-01

We’re not adverse to a bit of colour – quite the opposite – but we never thought we’d see a covetable pink belt. Folk have taken the time to prove us wrong with this woven pink belt. The reason this works is the pink isn’t an overbearing hot pink, a colour we still associate with juicy couture tracksuits, and because the tan leather compliments the aforementioned toned down colouring. We also think it’d work very well as a focal point in an outfit, like what Milan Vukmirovic did on the Sartorialist recently. (Oi Polloi)

You know the drill, detailed shots after the leap.

Selectism - Martin Margiela Shoulder Bag

For those looking for a deal on some of the Margiela Bags, head over to AR before to get your hands on this shoulder bag. The Italians made shoulder bag is made from 50/50 calf and lamb leather for an incredibly soft finish. The tanned leather accent of the shoulder strap works very well against the black of the bag.

“The Lamborghini Murcielago Strada Concept by Reiter Engineering has replaced the front splitter, rear diffuser, and rear wing with carbon fiber parts. The new vented hood gives it a mean machine look as well.” (notcot)

02. Pete Doherty: ‘We’ve discussed making a new Libertines album’

04. Big Book: The Handy Book of Artistic Printing

” ‘Degenerate,’ ‘meaningless,’ and ‘barbaric’ were some of the words critics used to describe artistic printing—an ornately decorative style that flourished in late-nineteenth-century Britain and America. Letterpress printers (small shops where type was laboriously set by hand) developed it in making business cards, advertisements, and other ‘ephemera’ of daily life. It soon became known as the paper equivalent of a Victorian bourgeois living room” (wsj)
