Creep by Hiroshi Awai Spring/Summer 2010

Selectism - Creep by Hiroshi Awai Spring/Summer 2010

Hiroshi Awai continues to bring forth his style of fashion through Creep. For Spring/Summer 2010, Creep gets nautical on the season. Blazers are fashioned with slimming shorts, while pop color chinos are mixed with shawl collar knits. A nice Canadian alternative to the run of the mill nautical inspired lines.

Many more looks at the Creep by Hiroshi Awai Spring/Summer 2010 collection after the jump.

Giuliano Fujiwara Spring/Summer 2010 Bags

selectism - giuliano-fujiwara-spring-2010-bags-01

We’ve been fans of Giuliano Fujiwara’s accessories for eons now (we hate to toot our own horn, but we don’t remember any other blogs featuring him before we did) and we’ve managed to get our mitts on his SS10 accessories. We’ll start slow with the bags today and slowly work our way up to the trainers on Friday.

The bags themselves are as nice as you’d expect from Fujiwara, featuring everything from backpacks to totes. As with every ‘designer’ collection, there’s a twist. This time, it’s the backpack straps on totes and messengers.

Take a look for yourself after that leap.

Nigel Cabourn Everest Pattern Shawl Collar Sweater

selectism - nigel-cabourn-everest-shawl-collar-sweater-01

Nigel Cabourn has been in this game for years and it’s made him an animal. He’s known for his attention to detail, high quality and equally high price points. Pieces like this display two of those aforementioned points with the authentic Everest pattern and shawl collar (and you know we love a shawl collar).  And at £200, it’s an affordable slice of Cabourn. (Coggles)

You know the drill, detailed shots after the leap.

Garbstore Officers Shirt

selectism - garbstore-officers-shirt-01

One of the annoying things about the menswear blogosphere is that a lot of people spend all their time blogging about a small number of brands and other just as good, if not better, brands get left by the wayside. That’s been the case with Garbstore. Their online store has been on sale since forever but pieces like this are still on sale. What gives? You’d have to be an idiot to not want this piece at that price (£45). Go get it before we do. (Garbstore)

Get an up close look at the pattern after the jump.

Summer Surf City | NYC

selectism - Summer Surf City | NYC

Though published a week ago, I’m just now discovering the From Tar Beach to Rockaway Point, East Coast Surfing is Epic photo shoot from Paper Mag. Given our interest in brands like Warriors of Radness here, one shouldn’t be surprised that the images hooked. Despite knowing and understand that it is 1) possible to surf near NYC and 2) people do it, the juxtaposition of activity to vision of the City always strikes a cord. Many of the photographs presented in the feature do that very well.

A few selections after the jump. Go to Paper Mag for the full and also notes on the garments worn.

Design Book Round Up

curated mag - Design Book Round Up

The good folks at Dwell have produced a tidy review of four newly published design books. Covered, in short burst review, are titles dedicated mainly to architecture. Taschen’s Architecture Now! Houses Design Book Round Up, Louis I. Kahn Design Book Round Up, and Conversations with Frank Gehry Design Book Round Up all appear to deliver close to what the names suggest. Most fascinating among the quartet of books – Camps: A Guide to 21st-Century Space Design Book Round Up. More Burning Man than the New Hampshire located Camp Kingswood I attended as a lad.

All four reviews can be found here.

James Perse Sueded Jersey Robe

selectism - james-perse-sueded-jersey-robe

As the great philospher Biggie Smalls once said ‘mo money, mo problems’. The same rule applies to clothes. What we mean by that is that once you tumble down the hill of sartorial excellence, you don’t tend to stop until you’re analysing your loungewear. We’ve reached that point. Strangely enough, our girlfriends don’t think old tracksuit bottoms with holes in the crotch are a good look, so we may be forced to step up our game up.

That’s where James Perse comes in. This robe is made from super-soft supima cotton and will give off a very Omar-like flow in the wind should you feel the need to pop out for some crunchy nut cereal. It’s available at The Shop at Bluebird and his own website. (James Perse)

Selectism - A Celebration Of July: Poster Collective

01. British Design: Not What It Used to Be

“Strikes. Disappearing letters. Shuttered post offices. Irritatingly long queues and suspicious smells in the survivors. There are (sadly) lots of reasons for the British to indulge in the popular national pastime of grumbling about the Royal Mail this summer.” (iht)

02. A Celebration Of July: Poster Collective (above)

“Returning for its second year, ‘A Celebration of July‘ displays 31, A1 posters each representing the day of a creative individuals from across Europe. Open to public: Tuesday 18 – Friday 28 August. Time: 10.00am – 6.00pm weekdays and 10.00am – 4.00pm Saturdays. Venue: Atrium Gallery, London College of Communication, Elephant & Castle, London SE1 6SB” (typeneu)

03. Absolut Chooses The Flavor Of Boston

“What is the flavor of Boston? Boston has become the third city to be chosen by Absolut Vodka to get its own flavor. Like the old Absolut ad above, it celebrates Boston’s history with a little tea. The limited edition flavor will be black tea and elderflower vodka in a glass bottle that has a backdrop that is reminiscent of Fenway Park’s infamous Green Monster.”  (luxist)

04. Food Assistance – Good Transparency by Gavin Potenza

“Good Magazine released a new Transparency today, this time concerning the growth of food stamp usage. It’s crazy to think that almost 10% of the country uses food stamps! The chart was done by Gavin Potenza, who i think did an amazing job. I love the colors used and the food shapes are perfectly done and really recognizable.” (+kn)

Timberland Boot Company | Designer Pete Lankford’s Fall 2009 Picks

26 August 2009, 01.36 | Posted in Shoes | 2 comments »

selectism - Timberland Boot Company | Designer Pete Lankford's Fall 2009 Picks

Timberland Boot Company’s Creative Director Pete Lankford has been designing footwear since 1993. In that time, he’s moved from a small start-up firm, through Converse, to Timberland. Throughout this time, Lankford has been interested in hard, science-based research, focusing on the precise bio-mechanical tweaks that make a better shoe.

One might then assume that his newest project at Timberland Boot Company, rooted as it is in American footwear heritage from the first half of the 20th-century, might be a departure from core interests. However, Lankford is quick to remind that Timberland Boot Company is not in the business of making antiques.

“It’s easy to recreate an old classic from your archive,” Lankford says. “Ultimately, I think there is a lot more  [to it] when you combine what’s intriguing from the past and bring it with a sophisticated manner to the world today. I don’t think there are many brands doing that. I think there is a lot to play with there.”

The line is based on the lessons found in materials and construction, resulting in footwear with a classic sensibility that is finely tuned to contemporary needs. So, even though Lankford’s eye is directed historically to the period between 1900 to 1950, his mind as a designer remains tied to concrete notions of how shoes fit today. He does this with the finest Horween leathers and suedes sourced from a venerable factory in Leeds.

With the fall 2009 Timberland Boot Company collection filtering into the shops, we asked Lankford to choose his two favorite shoes. The first, the Colrain Reissue Chukka (above) is described as a very simple shoe in its patterning and piecing. It is stripped to its essential needs and the quarter is sewn to the toe following historic precident. The second shoe picked by Lankford is the Counterpane 6-Inch Lace Boot. A simply constructed shoe, its aesthetic comes from a design that is pushed by referencing construction choices.

Salvor Projects Black Canvas Workboot

Selectism - Salvor Projects Black Canvas Workboot

An interesting take on the velcro workboot from Salvor Projects available now at OAK. Rather than wrapping the leather finish on it as expected, they used a canvas upper reminiscent of those French boots we covered a little earlier in the day. The whole package is finished with a steel toe for some serious aggro clubbing.

More looks at the Salvor Projects Black Canvas Workboot after the jump.
