Cy Choi Spring 2010

Selectism - Cy Choi Spring 2010

The Fashionisto debuts Korean designer, Chul Young Choi, new label: Cy Choi. “Cy Choi debuts this spring with a collection entitled ‘Boundaries and Cutout.’ The range is an extension of Choi’s intense research going into the collection. Inspired by the work of three artists, he came to appreciate the 3-dimensionality of garments that could be worn and appreciated in various ways from different perspectives. Choi’s three muses helped him come to this direction: ‘El Lisstzky for the construction of the garments, Henry Matisse for the deep exploration of the meaning and the technique of the cutout, [and] Chris Johansen, whose work has inspired the physical postures of the presentation of the collection. ”

Selectism - GANT 60th Anniversary Shirts

Men.style gives a preview of the 60th anniversary collection from GANT. “Trawling the archives for inspiration is a common tactic for design teams these days, but Gant has got a richer history than most. The company marks its 60th birthday this year and is celebrating with six limited-edition shirts inspired by its lengthy back catalog. They’re contemporary updates on vintage designs rather than slavish re-creations, but some do tend more in one direction than the other.”

Odd Wisconsin

selectism - odd wisconsin

“Sometimes powerful and compelling stories come from unexpected and unusual places.”

Given the absolute truth of the above statement, the Wisconsin Historical Society has mounted an on-going exhibition dedicated to weird and wonderful objects. Odd Wisconsin includes such items as an Oscar Meyer Banjo and a Bull Semen Parachute (both seen above). The parachute was used to used by the University of Wisconsin to deliver fresh bull semen to rural farmers in the 1940s. Unaware that such an activity every happened? Us too. And, it is these types of stories and the objects that keep them alive that make Odd Wisconsin so fun. The exhibition was curated by Joe Kapler, who I worked with while at UW.

A great selection of objects and stories are available from Wisconsinhistory.org.

Selectism - Oliver Peoples 2010 Campaign Preview

Two great shots from the forthcoming Oliver People’s campaign for 2010. Autumn de Wilde shot Shirley Manson and Elijah Wood for the campaign which also features a short film (coming soon) that accompanies the shoot. We’re short on images from the campaign but plan to report back with more as they come in.

Bell & Ross BR 01 94 Pro Titanium Watch

Selectism - Bell & Ross BR 01 94 Pro Titanium Watch

Bell & Ross continues to push the BR-01 model with a take in titanium. “The Pro Titanium was the first watch to be fitted with the dark grey BR rubber strap that is now used for the special edition Commando models. The strap is meant to match the dark grey, metallic colour of the watch’s dial. This brings us to Bell & Ross’ third principle of design. As bold as the hour markers and hands are on the other BR Instruments, the ones on the Pro Titanium are the boldest. They are wide and large and have a healthy dose of SuperLuminova photo-luminescent paint applied to them.” (mattbaily)

Frank O. Gehry Since 1997

selectism - Frank O. Gehry Since 1997

DesignBoom has posted some superb images of models from the Frank O. Gehry Since 1997 exhibition now on view at the Triennale Design Museum in Milan. Focus is on work created after completion of the Guggenheim in Bilbao.

Given the confused layout of the recent exhibition focusing on the Lewis House (the project that allowed Gehry ample time and resource to explore the ideas that have become his hallmark), one can only hope that his one is a little better. That said, the material appears engaging and Gerhy’s efforts are always breathtaking.

Selected images of models of the Pritzker Pavillion in Chicago and Atlantis Sentosa in Singapore follow.

Mismo for Storm M/S Canvas collection

selectism - mismo-ms-canvas-01

Sexless and anonymous. That’s how Mismo founder Adam Bach would describe the current array of choices for work briefcases. Rather than sit and moan about it (like we’d do) he’s done something about it. To be exact, he’s done three things about it.

There’s a briefcase, document holder (pictured above) and a pouch bag. The latter is sure to offend the insecure out there – we can hear the cries of ‘it’s too effeminate’ already – but it’s a great solution for those days when you’ve got just enough stuff to justify a carrying device but not enough for a full on bag. All three bags are available from Mid-November at the usual retailers.

Take a gander at the bags after the leap.

Where The Wild Things Are for Opening Ceremony Parka

selectism - opening-ceremony-max-lined-parka

We know the standard protocol in the blogosphere is to never rag on collaborations, but they’ve been pretty bad lately. We’re talking to you, APC and Supreme. We were ready to crown this OC collab the worst of them all, but then we saw this parka. It’s not amazing, but it looks like something we’d wear, which is more than you can say for the rest of the collection. Our main advice on this piece? Wait for the January sale. (Opening Ceremony)
