Selectism - John Varvatos Chuck Taylor All Star Painted Canvas

With the launch of the recently opened John Varvatos online store, shoppers across the USA have the ability to seek out some of those more difficult to find of Varvatos looks. One of our favorites is the black burgundy All Star Painted Canvas. Sure it’s not from his mainline, but the Converse collection does work under certain circumstances.Unfortunately, all that remains is a size 11, but keep browsing – they are gems from Varvatos to be had online.

selectism - Garbstore Autumn/Winter 2009

Garbstore founder Ian Paley is something of a casual clothing legend. A glance through Phil Thorton’s Casuals (a book detailing the rise of fashion cult on the football terraces) reinforces the status, as well as sets a tone for the type of garments produced by the brand. Paley’s clothes are created with an uncanny eye for detail. Hidden pockets, expertly chosen zippers and brasses, the perfect fabric. “Unfamiliar Vintage” is the tag line, describing both aesthetic and process.

For autumn and winter 2009, Garbstore’s collection continues to pull from work and sportswear. Simply composed knit sweatshirts are among the many highlights, playing well with strong shirting, denim and outerwear offerings. All are designed with full understanding of past style and manufacture, but with a unique eye to tailoring that knowledge to contemporary needs.

The images used for the autumn/winter campaign stem from “The Unfamiliar Vintage Project.”

LL BEAN Tote Bag for Heritage Research

Selectism - LL BEAN Tote Bag for Heritage Research

Looks like a normal Bean bag right? Well it’s a bit more original than one might assume. Back the 1920’s the L.L. Bean company produced a 30oz duck canvas bag used to haul ice around the hills of Maine and New England. Heritage Research was able to get the Bean to reproduce a run of these rugged totes sized medium with long double strength handles, reinforced flat canvas bottom and overlapped seams.” The double-stitch finish rounds it all out.  This is a serious tote available at Oi Polloi.

Lou Dalton Waxed Cotton Jacket

Selectism - Lou Dalton Waxed Cotton Jacket

With Barbour jacket’s finding their way onto every Hoxtonite in sight, finding a waxed cotton jacket that doesn’t look out misplaced in the city has become a tough task. Our main issue wasn’t that it looked bad per se; it just didn’t feel right wearing a pristine Barbour in the city.

Updating a classic, Lou Dalton’s jacket is a refreshing shade of burgundy, separating the wearer from the swathes of navy’s, grey and military greens that menswear is fond of this season. On top of this, it’s also got the added bonus of being made in England. Price is £275 and it’s available from Daniel Jenkins.

Camo ‘Cabin B’ Jumper

selectism - camo-pullover-cardigan-01

We know, it’s another shawl neck – we have it on good advice that they’re the new crew neck. Camo’s been on our radar ever since we first spotted them back at B&B in January and it’s always a pleasure to see a piece you like make it into stores. While navy would be the most predictable choice, we much prefer the beige version, it’ll go easier with earthy tones, splashes of colour and, more importantly, everyone else will have the navy one. Apartamento | Richard Lamb The Everyday Life Collector

selectism - apartamento-richard-lamb-01

London Design week usually means a slew of special events popping up all over town and this one is no different. One of our favourite magazines, Apartamento, are hosting an exhibition in London next week. They’ve joined forces with Richard Lamb, a hobbyist pottery collector, to display his personal collection of pottery and ceramics. Lamb has been collecting pieces found from thrift stores, car boot sales and antique markets for 15 years, building up a formidable collection. You can buy pieces if you like, although there’s no word on pricing (read: too expensive if you need to ask). The exhibition runs from 11am-6pm from the 21st to the 27th of September. 1-5 Exhibition Road, South Kensington, SW7 2HE.

Selectism - british-fashion-designers-hywel-davies

With London fashion week starting up today, now’s a better time than ever to get a head start on some Anglophiliac reading. Thanks to a healthy dose of backing, it’s all about menswear in the UK right now. We’re even seeing those collections enter stores – something that would never have happened two years ago. This upcoming menswear day is sure to provide an antidote to the dud that was New York fashion week.

Written by Modern Menswear author Hywel Davies, BFD focuses on the heavy hitters of British fashion; Vivienne Westwood, Alexander McQueen, Paul Smith and the like, dedicating a chapter to each. It’d make for a worthy addition to your coffee table collection. Out next week, costing £24.95.
