UNIS Elliot Work Shirts

16 September 2009, 20.00 | Posted in Fashion | 2 comments »

Selectism - UNIS Elliot Work Shirts

The Elliot is UNIS’ answer to the “super work shirt.” Retailing at 295$US, it comes in higher than most shirt but you’re paying for a rugged built button-up with a suede elbow patch, two chest pockets, and a garment that doubles as a jacket. UNIS NYC. Explore their goods.

The
center front placket detailing is just as sophisticated as it gets.  But
this shirt/jacket is durable and rugged to be sure.  The detail of a sueded
elbow patch is one of my favorite features on the Elliot.  It also has two
chest pockets, with intricate pieces sewn onto the bias.

Dr. Martens 8 Eyelet Boot in White

Selectism - Dr. Martens 8 Eyelet Boot in White

Woah. I recall seeing these in Barcelona BBB a while back but when OAK dropped them into the a.ok shop, I was stunned again. It’s a bit tough to imagine the Martens 8 eyelet boot in any color other than black or dark cherry red, but I can imagine some distinct men rocking these properly. Finished in all white, they will indeed look much more relaxed once they take on some road wear. They’ll probably even look better than any pre-distressed Martens’ “inspired” boot you can find on the market now. Personally, I am waiting on those Stussy collabs to drop.

Hugo Pratt Funnel Neck Jacket

Selectism - Hugo Pratt Funnel Neck Jacket

We are not surprised at the number of high end brands that are turning to online boutiques to increase the reach of their looks. Farfetch, which has always housed some of the most desirable brands, keeps increasing their stocklist with solid, hard to find looks. This Hugo Pratt may well be one of them. “Black double-breasted jacket from Hugo Pratt with a ribbed funnel neck and two flap-top front pockets. The jacket has an inner zip-up closure concealed by a double-breasted button fastening with branded silver buttons. There are matching 3-button details on the cuffs and a navy and gold stripe detail around the left cuff.”

Lou Dalton Cable Knit Hand Made Jumper

16 September 2009, 17.30 | Posted in Fashion | 1 comment »

Selectism - lou-dalton-cable-knit-jumper-01

We featured this collection way back when and it’s always nice to follow up when a product has finally ‘dropped’ in stores. Hand made is an overused term in fashion (most of these pieces are hand finished, which is a long way from hand made), but it’s a term that applies justly to this Lou Dalton Crewneck jumper, which is hand made from start to finish. The multi-coloured flecking is right up our alley and the only gripe is the price, which at £625, makes the piece one to save up for. And before you ask, no, we’re not sure why the oki-ni model looks so odd in this jumper either. (Oki-Ni)

Paul Smith Shawl Collar Flecked Wool Jumper

selectism - paul-smith-flecked-wool-jumper-01

We’ve been overdosing on shawl collars lately, forgive us. We’ve also been overdosing on Paul Smith for a while – but we’re not asking for forgiveness about that. We don’t usually post up black jumpers as they’re a bit too ‘KGB Hitman’ for our tastes. Thankfully the flecking (not sure if that’s the term for it, but stay with us) makes sure you don’t look like one of those guys who think black is slimming. And if you are, don’t be fooled – we can still see your gut regardless of the colour of your sweater. (Paul Smith)

The Brilliant Line: Following the Early Modern Engraver

16 September 2009, 15.14 | Posted in Art | No comments »

curated mag - The Brilliant Line: Following the Early Modern Engraver

The Brilliant Line opens Friday at Rhode Island School of Design’s Museum of Art. The exhibition explores the art of engraving and its rapid transformation during the European Renaissance (1480 – 1650), drawing on work from innovators such as Albrecht Durer.

Aside from the on-site, RISD has launched a fine interactive feature on their website. There you may explore details of chosen engravings and watch a video detailing  the steps of engraving. Relatively low tech, but still enough to engage in the technical process behind the prints. The exhibition will run until January 3, 2010.

What’s happening in fashion right now? First Nigel Cabourn is featured in T magazine and now YMC are interviewed for The Independent. Regardless of whether you think workwear is a trend or not, there’s no mistaking the fact a lot of ‘proper clobber’ brands are getting mainstream love at the moment. While the feature runs on the angle that no one’s heard of YMC before – a dubious claim at best – it’s an interesting article and well worth a read. (The Independent)

GQ | The Sartorialist’s Style Tips

16 September 2009, 10.30 | Posted in interview | 1 comment »

selectism - sartorialist-gq-magazine

The Sart’s promotion drive keeps on truckin’. Aside from the umpteen signing appearances he has scheduled, he also found time to give his style tips to GQ UK. There’s nothing ground breaking in the short feature – wear one pair of jeans that fit well, cardigan slims a silhouette – but it’s worth a gander nonetheless. It’s only a matter of time before he starts giving out his ‘the sex’ tips.

Selectism - Sclavi’s Rolling Chair by Sergio Calatroni Artroom

01. Sclavi’s Rolling Chair by Sergio Calatroni Artroom (above)

“Sergio Calatroni Art Room in Milan have customised a wheelchair for Italian art director Fabrizio Sclavi. This, the second customisation of Sclavi’s wheelchair, adds a textile patchwork seat to the previous tape customisation done in 2008.” (dezeen)

02. London Design Guide 2010

“Just in time for visitors coming to London next week for the city’s massive annual design event, the London Design Guide comprehensively lists the places, people and resources that celebrate design. The book organizes the destinations—boutiques, restaurants, hotels, galleries and more—by neighborhood, including a map of the locale and a local’s narrative through it—naturally, all with a clean, well-designed layout.” (coolhunting)

03. Dalian Shide stadium / NBBJ

“NBBJ’s proposed design for the new Dalian Shide football stadium in China represents a new direction in sports architecture by moving away from the creation of a building based on pure form. The organic architecture of the building challenges the typical stadium typology to become more than an impressive skin wrapped around an ordinary seating bowl.” (archdaily)

04. Panasonic’s New LED Bulbs Shine for 19 Years

“Despite lasting longer and being more efficient than both incandescent and CFL bulbs, LEDs haven’t caught on because of their sky-high prices. But now Panasonic wants to bring LEDs to the mainstream — at least in Japan — with a 60-watt household bulb that the company claims can last up to 19 years, or 40 times longerthan incandescent bulbs.” (inhabitant)
