selectism - narrative-leather-boots-01

We featured this way back in the day and a reader asked us to actually feature it when it dropped in stores. Well, here it is. ASOS have taken stock of one of our favourite shoes from the AW09 collection and it looks as good as ever. We don’t have much else to say about it really. If you like it, buy it – if not, then don’t. Simple as. (ASOS)

While blogs are on a unstoppable rise, the appreciation for a tangible object is one that doesn’t fade. That’s why magcloud seek to open up magazine publishing, making it possible for anyone who wishes to pay a menial fee (20¢ per page) to start their own magazine and make profit from it. As you can see from the two covers above, it’s possible to create newsstand worthy magazines – although you’re Indesign skills will need to be up to scratch. (Magcloud)

Selectism - Designers Against Human Rights Abuse

01. Orginal Computer Space arcade machine up on eBay

“If you have $2,500 laying around, you would be crazy stupid not to buy this classic piece of gaming history. Computer Space was the first commercially sold coin-operated video game and now you can own one of only 1800 working models ever made. Even better, it comes with the original schematics prepared by Nutting Associates’ Chief Engineer, Nolan Bushnell.” (crunchgear)

02. Frankfurt Preview: Volkswagen 1-liter concept, 158 mpg (US) tandem 2-seater

“Ono of the numerous cars that will be shown by Volkswagen this week at the Frankfurt Motor Show is the latest edition of the 1-liter concept. The name represents the amount of fuel it takes the vehicle to travel 100 km (62 miles) and nominally equates to 235 mpg. In this case, based on the translation, it appears that VW might be taking some liberties with the name since it seems to take 1.49 liters / 100 km, or a mere 157.8 mpg (US). For all practical purposes, the difference is largely inconsequential since so little fuel is used at these lofty levels.” (autoblog)

03. Designers Against Human Rights Abuse (above)

“Designers Against Human Rights Abuse have just released their second book, featuring contributions from Bibliotheque, Brighten the Corners, Stefan Gandl (NeubauBerlin), Alex Haigh (Thinkdust/HypeforType), Nick Hard (Research Studios), Jeff Knowles (Research Studios), Abbott Miller (Pentagram), Si Scott, Paul Skerm, Un.titled.” (acejet170)

04. Jim Carroll, Poet and Punk Rocker Who Wrote ‘The Basketball Diaries’, Dies at 60

“Jim Carroll, the poet and punk rocker in the outlaw tradition of Rimbaud and Burroughs who chronicled his wild youth in “The Basketball Diaries,” died on Friday at his home in Manhattan. He was 60.” (nyt)

Shipley & Halmos Spring 2010

Selectism - Shipley & Halmos Spring 2010

The Fashionisto gives their take on Shipley & Halmos’ Spring 2010 collection. “Opting for a presentation this season, Shipley & Halmos turned to short films for inspiration. Entitled “Versus”, the collection took shape in the form of four films showcasing models in the same ensembles illustrating various scenarios such as “static versus motion” or “action versus reaction”. The concept is a great play on words and emotions seeing as designers Sam Shipley and Jeff Halmos took a more lax route this season.” (photos: men.style)

Selectism - Band of Outsiders Spring/Summer 2010

Tim Blanks at men.style chimes in on the runway looks from Band of Outsiders for Spring 2010. “This time around, he opted for something simpler, a literal interpretation of summer sun, beach, pool—the kind of California fantasy that might be nursed by a guy growing up in Ohio. But, this being Band of Outsiders, it wasn’tquite so simple. Sternberg had been watching Jacques Cousteau docs, and he was keen on blending their rugged nautical types with his own aesthetic.”

Selectism - Sinn 917 Rallye Destro Chronograph

The latest from Sinn is in the form of this Rallye Destro Chronograph. The “Destro” or left-handed watch, has the crown and pushers on the left hand side of the timepiece.  The 44mm casing is safe to 100meter in the water, and features strong German styled features. Much more function than fashion, we still love the look of the chrono. (timezone)

Schott Factory Tour

Selectism - Schott Factory Tour

Mr. Williams loves driving and visiting those long forgotten factories in the USA making everything we love. Recently, he visited the Schott factory in New Jersey. Schott is serous business. At one tradeshow a few years ago, they even yelled at me for taking photos of pieces I was approved to take photos of. That’s resistance at its best. “Schott Bros. Inc has been making quality outerwear for motorcyclists and military men in the New York City area since 1913 when Irving Schott founded the company on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. Still to this day a family run business, Schott is doing what they do best, making a good product at a fair price. So do yourself and your fellow Americans a favor and buy a Perfecto.”

Selectism - Brooks Brothers Black Fleece Fragrance

Brooks Brother’s Black Fleece launched a new fragrance as part of last Thursday’s “Fashion Night Out.” “This packaging for Brooks Brothers combines the traditional world of fine tailoring with the distinctly forward thinking attitude of Thom Brown’s Black Fleece collections. Ceramics and references to office stationary of the 1940s are reinterpreted in a thoroughly modern way. A zip-strip on the secondary packaging tears off to remove all graphics, revealing a pure white inner box, containing layers of cut-out felt and fabric used in suit-making, cushioned around the bottle.” (dieline)
