Thom Browne Spring/Summer 2010 – The Details

Selectism - Thom Browne Spring/Summer 2010

NY Mag’s coverage of the Thom Browne show warrants a look. While they show the full runway shots, we were most pleased with their coverage of “the details.” Macro shots of the runway show focus in on the accessories and the details of the collection. Expect the usual though.

More “detail” looks at the Thom Browne Spring/Summer 2010 collection after the jump.

Prism Eyewear

14 September 2009, 17.30 | Posted in Accessories | No comments »

selectism - prism-eyewear-01The idea of glasses as an accessory is still a thorny issue for some. Some feel it’s a fakery too far, others feel it’s an easy way to update their look. Us? We’re sitting on the fence. The entire SL team wear glasses so we can appreciate the way they can be the finishing touch to your outfit.

Prism appreciate this too, and their hand made and hand finished eyewear is an easy way to achieve the ‘I actually wear glasses’ look – their founder was even on Garance Dore, showing off some of the glasses. Finished in a family-run factory in Italy, the unisex glasses are made without a mould – ensuring each pair are unique.

More pictures of the collection are after the leap.

One Hundred Years of Menswear

selectism - 100 Years of Menswear

Cally Blackman is a lecturer in the history of fashion at Central Saint Martins College. As one might imagine, she’s written extensively about the history of fashion and garments, and her latest strikes the nerve of our little blog. One Hundred Years of Menswear presents a comprehensive collection of images covering the last century of innovative men’s fashions. Along the way Blackman discusses the elegance of Savile Row, the rough and tumble of khaki and denim, and the impact of designers like Armani and Lauren.

Look out for One Hundred Years of Menswear later this month from Laurence King Publishing.

Uniqlo Corduroy Shirts

selectism - uniqlo-corduroy-shirt-01

Let’s be honest – if you’re buying half the things mentioned on these menswear blogs (including us, obviously), you’ll need to skimp somewhere. Uniqlo’s speciality is making one piece that you’ll end up buying at least three colourways of. Last season it was oxfords, which they’ve continued making, and this season it’s corduroy shirts. Colours range from the calm (grey) to the not-so calm (hot pink) and the price is an affordable £14.99. At the moment it’s only available online in Uniqlo’s Japanese store, although it’s available in physical stores around the world. (Uniqlo)

Take a look at more colourways after the leap.

Margaret Howell Crewneck Jumper

14 September 2009, 13.30 | Posted in Fashion | No comments »

selectism - margaret-howell-crewneck-jumper-01While we liked the look of Nom De Guerre’s sweaters, we can’t support a £165 piece that’s 20% nylon. If you had to go for one crewneck this season, we’d recommend this one. It’s by Margaret Howell – so quality is all but guaranteed – and the fabric blend is a luxurious merino wool and cashmere. As a wise man once said, ‘who needs nylon when you’ve got cashmere?’  (The Bureau)

Detailed shots are after the leap.

Natural Selection Denim

Selectism - natural-selection-denim-01

If you’re anything like us, you’ve been wearing raw denim for years now. You’ve been through more febreze and patched more crotch holes than you ever thought possible. It’s time for us to ask the question that Jake Davis asked last week; Is it ever okay to wear pre-distressed denim?

If, like us, you’re veering towards yes, then Natural Selection are the denim line for you. The denim has the authentic hallmarks that denim obssessives love – denim from Okayama, reasonable weight (14.5 oz), chain stitching – as well as a pre-distressed denim for those who don’t like the idea of wearing their denim every day for a year. Before Kiya spits out his coffee in disgust, they also offer a raw version – so you can do things the authentic way. Currently available at Start, Coggles and Selfridges.

Take a leap to see more pictures.

Robert Geller Spring 2010 Runway

13 September 2009, 18.00 | Posted in Fashion | No comments »

Selectism - Robert Geller Spring 2010 Runway

The Fashionisto gives their take on the Rober Geller Spring 2010 runway show. “Color and emotion are central to the story that Robert Geller has in store for spring 2010. Known for his genius use of color, Geller turned to German artist Michael Sowa for inspiration. Using color in a meaningful way that elicits strong emotions, the collection contrasts electric blue, mustard yellow, cobalt and purple against black and white for an effect that is empowering. Geller does not dabble in color, but jumps in head first, dressing his garments in vivid hues that stand apart from a sea of safe choices.”
