01. Oh, London

“The whole ‘brand’ for London issue was probably kicked off by the various ‘ON’ variants introduced by previous Mayor Ken Livingston. Which was then confused further by Visit London’s own variant on the theme (they’re the tourist ‘bit’, in case you’re wondering).” (creativereview)

02. Stone Island Shadow Project (above)

“Last night Stone Island had a little gathering in their Covent Garden Store for the unveiling of their Shadow collection. – Stone Island Shadow is primarily a system based upon the idea of clothing as a man’s interface with his environment. Proven functional principals from both military and active sportswear allow the individual items in the collection to work both alone and, most effectively, synergistically together. The Grid is is independent of seasonal and aesthetic change.” (bntl)

03. DJ Hero to Feature Playable Daft Punk Characters

“Not only will Daft Punk be featured in the upcoming DJ Hero (out October 27), but players are able to get their future-robot on in a “special venue that mirrors the duo’s recent stage show and lighting,” according to a Rolling Stone report. I might have to get a bigger TV for this one.” (pitchfork)

04. Slow Motion Moscow (above)

“Moscow in slow motion. Camera and montage – Andrey Stvolinsky Music – Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble.”

Antonio Azzuolo Spring/Summer 2010 Preview

Selectism - Antonio Azzuolo Spring/Summer 2010 Preview

Take a sampling of the forthcoming Antonio Azzuolo Spring/Summer 2010 collection. Some words from men.style on the man and the line. “Azzuolo made his name as a bespoke tailor, and his suits are pieces to be reckoned with: immaculately constructed, traditionally detailed, and agreeably off-kilter. A smart three-piece, its jacket primly rope-shouldered, came in denim, of all fabrics (below). Will it play to the sticks? Well, I don’t know about that, but Azzuolo’s people did note that he’s gaining momentum (and stores) in Japan.”

Selectism - White's Boots Original Smoke Jumper

The gentlemen in the design firm next to me in the studio are raving at the moment over these Smoke Jumpers from White’s Boots. Upon examination of the website promoting these made to order boots, you realize how old school this system is. You must print out and mail in the measurement chart for a pair of these custom kickers. Within eight weeks you’ll have your own pair of “forest industry” class boots. To quote one architect, “anything good takes a few weeks to make… you should know that by now.” Here’s the best part -”Meets or exceeds requirements of NFPA 1977, Standard on Protective Clothing and Equipment for Wildland Fire Fighting, 2005 Edition.” Also available from Ben Meadow.

Selectism - Wings + Horns Melton Wool Shirt

Blackbird takes stock of this Melton Wool Shirt from Wings + Horns. “This super-fitted top takes all the right details of a traditional hunting shirt jacket – utility-minded pockets, moisture wicking wool construction – and combines it with a razor sharp cut and beautiful craftsmanship. Wear it over a flannel shirt and jeans or layer it under a leather or jean jacket for a little extra warmth when it starts to get cold this year.”

Selectism - T’s Men’s Fashion Issue Now Online

The latest issue of T is now online with cover man, Michael Fassbender as photographed by Jean-Baptiste Mondino. As they mention, “Appropriately, we track down fall’s most enigmatic trend: Sherlock Holmes-inspired Victoriana. The photographer Matthew Brookes shot ‘The Brothers Grim’ in Paris, while Cathy Horyn met with the designer Alexander McQueen in London to discuss his “hard-core view of sexuality presented in a romantic envelope of Victorian darkness.”

selectism - Vince Lombardi

Since the NFL season is now officially in full swing, enjoy this amazing photograph of Vince Lombardi. Taken during his time at Fordham (during the 1930s), the image is one of many outstanding football photographs available online through the Pro Football Hall of Fame. If you are into sporting history a whirl through the archive is highly recommended. Enjoy the remainder of week one.

Selectism - Courier Fashion by Ruud Baan

Yatzer highlights the photographic work of Ruud Baan which jumps onto the fixed gear train with a Rotterdamn based shoot. I am not really sure if we agree with his reason but the photos look fine. “Dutch photographer Ruud Baan thought that courier companies should pay more attention to their employees and dress them in the most fashionable way. After all, image counts. So he wandered around the streets of Rotterdam in order to find the best locations for shooting the ideal courier boy, with the help of studio Raar that constructed some unique hand made bicycles…”

Selectism Welcomes New Columnists

Selectism - New Bloggers

You may have noticed some new faces that have been added to Selectism’s roster of Columnists. I wanted to take a moment and formally welcome Kiya, Simon, and Theo to our establishment.

Many will know Kiya Babzani as the owner of SF’s Self Edge denim shop, but the man has much more up his sleeve. When he is not opening new retail in New York, he is focusing on his yoyo/toy company Anti-Yo and obsessing about bowling.

Simon Beckerman (above left) is publisher and editor in chief of PIG Magazine and partner with his brother Daniel in Super Sunglasses. He lives and works in Milan, Italy. I have spent many a tradeshow with this gentleman and his crew of Italo killers.

Finally, Theodore Rosendorf (above right) is the author and designer of “The Typographic Desk Reference” and a full time design consultant in the USA. Theo’s also a great writer so be sure to stick with him.

I’d also like to thank a moment to thank the Columnists that have been with us since day one. Brandon, Mr. Gervino, Chris, Steven, Tim, Beau, Ben, Kyle, and all the others have kept Selectism fresh. Many thanks to you all.

selectism - William Blake's World

Opening this weekend at The Morgan Library in New York, William Blake’s World: “A New Heaven Is Begun” draws exclusively from institutional holdings. Holland Cotter gives it the once over in today’s NYT. The general view, positive. I’m headed over tomorrow. The exhibition closes January 3, 2010.

A few more Blake images after the jump.
