Uppercase Magazine

selectism - uppercase-magazine-01

We’re simple minded folks. Give us something that looks pretty and we’re hooked. Case in point: Uppercase magazine. We saw it, thought it looked nice and wrote about it. It’s as simple as that.

Based in Canada, Uppercase magazine is the work of Janine Vangool and Deidre Martin, who both work for Uppercase studio in varying capacities. The magazine is tagged as ‘a magazine for the creative and curious’ and, unsurpisingly given the tagline, features interviews with creatives ranging from photographers to film directors.

We like the features and all that jazz, but the drawing point for us is the strong design. We won’t even waste your time blowing our horns about it, just take a leap to look at preview shots from issue 2.

Selectism - Lee Jelt Giants

01. Bubbletecture Stadium Popping Up in Melbourne

“A bubbly new soccer and rugby stadium is popping up in Melbourne that will feature a highly engineered exterior structure combined with many sustainable features. Designed by Cox Architects, the Melbourne Rectangular Stadium is a marvel of architecture and engineering with it’s bubble-like facade inspired by Buckminster Fuller’s geodesic dome. Construction is fully underway, allowing a glimpse into how the cantilevered structure is being put together.” (inhabitant)

02. Bike Share System 3.0

“As the bicycle becomes the preferred form of transport in modern cities, Copenhagen is holding an open design competition for a new bike share system. The city wants the system to be a faithful friend in an hour of need for Copenhageners, and to be an attractive product for the city’s guests.” (davidreport)

03. Sir Paul Smith is Guest of Honour 2010 – Stockholm Furniture Fair

The Glass Industry in South Boston

selectism - The Glass Industry in South Boston

Until I spent several years working with some of the mega collectors of Mt. Washington Glass, my interest in the glass industry and its breadth in Massachusetts was minimal at best. However, learning about the process of manufacture and the ties to American cultural history, I’ve become rather intrigued by the whole story.

Releasing in October, The Glass Industry in South Boston The Glass Industry in South Boston , is bound to satisfy a recent need for new research. The book was spearheaded by renowned appraiser Joan Kaiser, and covers Boston furnaces from 1811 to centuries end. Add to that the most complete pictorial history of Boston glass, and you’ve got a comprehensive tome.

Sound boring? Probably. But, don’t discount the glass industries roll in shaping America from art to lighting.

The Glass Industry in South Boston will be published by the University Press of New England.

Available for pre-order now from Amazon The Glass Industry in South Boston .

selectism - Billy Reid Autumn/Winter 2009

Hat’s off to Billy Reid for supporting the Southern Foodways Alliance in the autumn/winter 2009 collection. The simple cap (shown above) is a wonderful nod to the Reid’s Louisiana roots. Southern charm follows throughout the current selection. Subtle twists on classic knitwear, well conceived jackets and suiting, and a few more accessories that aren’t too shabby mingle with Italian made shirts. A well rounded set of goods.

Sweaters and jackets after the jump.

The Commuter Tie from Thomas Pink

Selectism - The Commuter Tie from Thomas Pink

It’s a simple idea really and for the commuter who is aware of his cabling. These neckties from Thomas Pink may be more than a marketing jump. The commuter tie is part of the Thomas Pink mainline for Autumn/Winter 2009. It features a small pocket and loop through on the reverse of the necktie to store the device. We’re putting it out there as someone may well be interested in keeping things close, though it may not be for everyone.
