Selectism Feature | Seven Days

08 September 2009, 17.03 | Posted in Fashion | 2 comments »

selectism - Seven-days-01-small

It’s finally up. We don’t want to keep on repeating ourselves about why we did this (Craig David had no influence on the name) so here’s an excerpt from the intro.

“Why seven days? Firstly, we’re not one for the overblown concepts – so huge sprawling photo shoots inspired by rabbits and vitamin C tablets weren’t for us. Secondly, it’s a nice homage to one of our favorite men’s magazines Men’s Non-No. And most of all, it’s just a nice way to show off how we’d wear these pieces.”

Take a gander at the full feature here.

Ute Ploier Navy Cardigan

selectism - ute-ploier-cardigan-01

So you want a navy cardigan. Good choice, fashion folks call  them timeless. There’s one slight problem. You don’t want one that’s exactly like the one you wore out last year. Solution? This Ute Ploier cardigan. It’s navy, but it looks different enough to justify a new purchase.

Like most Ploier pieces, you’ll need a couple of free coins in your pocket to purchase it. If you can’t quite justify it – do what every fashion magazine does and call it an investment. That’ll be sure to ease the pain when you look at your bank statement. (Farfetch)

Detailed images are after the leap.

Wood Wood Benjamin Sweatshirt

selectism - wood-wood-benjamin-sweatshirt-01

We don’t know where it’s came from, but we’ve developed quite a hankering for sweatshirts. And because we’re finicky menswear bloggers we’ve developed a very specific hankering. That hankering – I’m sure you’re tired of that word by now – is for supersoft grey marl.

The downside of a grey marl sweatshirt is that you run the risk of looking a little boring. The solution? I dunno, maybe a print or something. And as luck would have it, this Wood Wood sweat ticks all our boxes. (End Clothing)

Oliver Spencer Farringdon Boot

selectism - oliver-spencer-farringdon-boot-01

We guarantee that any vertically-challenged men are drooling at the prospect of this boot. It combines the wedge sole (aka the sole for the short) with a distinctly gruff looking leather upper; making a shoe to appease those who didn’t like the idea of wedged dress shoes. Best thing about this? It comes from a designer respected within workwear circles – both real and phony – so you can go about your daily duties without fear of being attacked by the heritage mafia. (Oliver Spencer)

Detailed shots, after that leap.

Selectism - Burberry for Liberty Limited Edition Trench Coat

In celebration of 25 years of London Fashion Week, Burberry has teamed with Liberty of London for two limited edition trenches for men and women. The black men’s model takes the foundation of the trench established by re-interpreting it “to reflect the mood and direction of the moment, whilst retaining the integrity of its design and function.” Each trench coat is individually numbered in an edition of 25 and will go on sale September 18th.

Give My Poor Heart Ease: Voices of the Mississippi Blues

07 September 2009, 19.27 | Posted in Books & Magazines | No comments »

selectism - Give My Poor Heart Ease

During the 1960s and 70s William Ferris traveled his native Mississippi documenting the lives and voices of local musicians. These were the voices that combined diverse musical traditions and formed authentic American blues. In the hands of Ferris images, history and sound combine to tell a rich story. Ferris’ introduction follows his own infatuation with the music, which given the tumult of the period in the American South was considered off limits.

Give My Poor Heart Ease includes photographs, music, and a documentary DVD of selections from Ferris’ personal study. Additionally, the book includes some 20 interviews with key musicians of the period. The package will be published next month through the University of North Carolina Press. A dedicated site has been set up for Give My Poor Heart Ease, and there’s more than enough their to fill the void before release.

Selectism - Alden for Context Roy Boot

Context works a nice exclusive with Alden to bring you a Roy Boot. “The Roy Boot is made on the Barrie last and is cut and sewn of Chromexcel (pull-up) leather processed by Chicago’s Horween Leather Company, established in 1905. This Chromexcel has a deep dark brown color with subtle hints of burgundy and tan that appear with bend and use. Alden’s plantation crepe sole has gained popularity for its comfort and appearance. The leather insole is made of flexible leather of pure vegetable tan.”

Selectism Feature Preview | 7 Days

Wine V-Neck Jumper; Red Hill selvedge tie (Oki-Ni) ; Grey oxford; Folk pink wonder belt (Oki-Ni); Edwin denim; Grenson brown brogue boots

We felt that, rather than any of the usual blog-empire extensions, (collabs, print magazines, online stores) we’d show you how we put it all together. Seeing as we feature products everyday (and complain about the styling every other day) this is one of those things that just made sense.

We’ve been more than a little critical of the influx of preppy/workwear stylings, but if we had to look preppy, this is how we’d do it. We’ve mixed pieces from our own wardrobe in with sample pieces because, let’s face it, no one goes out and buys an entire new wardrobe every six months.

The feature itself will be up tommorow.

Field and Stream

selectism - Field and Stream

While some of us on team Selectism are bored of work wear and “heritage” relaunch, others are pleased. I, for one, grew up wearing items from Filson and Woolrich (even when the cuts were crap and the materials a bit suspect), so seeing what I’ve always worn anyway repackaged doesn’t grate all that much. And, diversity of opinion is always nice too.

Field and Stream joins the throngs of “Americana” based brands with its relaunch. As Acquire notes, it’s the brand that outfitted Charles Lindberg on the first nonstop flight from the US to Paris. Field and Stream’s return focuses on two simple themes: American history and contemporary technical possibilities.

One thing that should be of interest are the price points (low), which are in keeping with the function over form looks. Head to the jump for trousers, jackets, and a few caps from the fall/winter collection.

Kolor Cardigan Jacket

07 September 2009, 15.30 | Posted in Fashion | No comments »

selectism - kolor-cardigan-jacket-01

We featured Kolor’s AW09 collection a while back, so now it’s out (in Japan at least) we can take another look. We’re big fans of pieces that do double duty; give us anything that can double as something else and we’re happy campers – so a cardigan/jacket was always going to float our collective boat. Right now this piece is only available at Arks, but as both Opening Ceremony and Browns carry Kolor, it’s only a matter of time before you non Proxy-ers/Japan-dwellers can get your hands on this. (Arks)

Take a look at detailed looks after the leap.
