YMC Yellow Shawl Collar Zip Sweater

02 September 2009, 17.30 | Posted in Fashion | No comments »

selectism - ymc-yellow-zip-sweater-01

Yellow is still a taboo in menswear. We’re the first to admit that it doesn’t suit everyone, but a little bit of colour can add a whole lot to an outfit. If you’re into the chambray and denim look, then chances are that you’re looking a bit boring right now – don’t take offense. A sweater, like this YMC one, would be the perfect way to add a bit of life to your look. (My Wardrobe)

Lodger Kudu Brogued Boot

selectism - lodger-brogue-boot-01

We’re about to say something that will be blasphemous to a lot of our readers, brace yourself. We think these boots are better than Tricker’s brogue boots. There, we said it – send your hate mail the usual way.

We don’t say such a thing lightly. We’ve been tossing about in our sleep (not in that way) thinking about making such a bold statement. Full disclosure here; one of us does work on Lodger’s site and therefore we’ve seen the shoe up close and personal – which is why we feel confident in our statement.

Why are they better? Firstly, the leather used is a rare antique African antelope leather called Kudu, which is so rare that this shoe of month genuinely won’t be able to be repeated again. And secondly, we prefer Lodger’s construction – as a new company they can’t rely on heritage stories to sell their products, so they have to prove how good their pieces are by their craftmanship.

This is Lodger’s September shoe of the month and our favourite yet; don’t be surprised if you see us about wearing a pair of these. (Lodger)

selectism - Outlier Nailhead Cap

The guys at Outlier continue their steady run of caps produced by New York milliner Victor Osborn. Constructed of a favorite worsted wool, the namesake nailhead, the cap has a subtle pinprick pattern producing good depth of character. The liner is designed to wick sweat away – key for those long fall Sunday rides.

Available in black, navy, and a light blue gray.

Folk Striped T-Shirt

selectism - folk-striped-t-shirt

How did this happen? In between all the fawning over chambray and oxford shirts, regular t-shirts have been pushed to the wayside. It’s time to put down the chambray – it won’t hurt – and pick up this Folk tee instead. It’s a good weight, looks good and it’s dead comfy. What else could ask for? You won’t look like every other menswear blogger for a day or two, but that’s no bad thing. (Folk)

Interview | Ann Demeulemeester

02 September 2009, 10.28 | Posted in interview | No comments »

selectism - ann-demeulemeester-interview

Like Junya Watanabe, Ann Demeulemeester has been doing her thing in a relatively quiet way for years now. Her collections aren’t fawned over like, say, Lanvin’s are – but they’ve retained an aesthetic to which her customers have grown accustomed to.

Interview magazine teams her up with Jamie Del Moon, one of her models, for a short interview. We find out that Demeulemeester has her family backstage (her parents haven’t missed a show yet) and that she has a new collection coming out where she reissues key pieces from previous collections. When asked about it, she replied:

“It’s called Collection Blanche, or White Collection. It’s white because it’s blank, without any identifying dates. I did it because people kept saying things like, “Oh, I loved those trousers. Can’t you make ones like them again?” Or, “I love my jacket, but it’s falling apart. I want the same one.” It’s because certain pieces of clothing become like friends. They become a part of your life. You can’t stand it if, all of a sudden, they are gone. I wanted to do this collection because it was like going back and finding old friends for me, too. It was great to go through the archives and say, “Wow, why don’t we make this again?”

Selectism - Kai D. Spring 2010 Lookbook

The guys over at Kai D. had a fantastic hand crafted look book that we snagged at (capsule) show. Once unfolded, the front side revealed a map of lower Manhattan from 1936. But flip it over to find eight pockets containing postcards showing off their Spring 2010 collection, while the backside continues to carry the Artisan/blue collar vibe with interesting and insightful script. -cw

Selectism - Public School Bleached Denim Jacket Spring 2010

Public School pulled out an interesting take on the bleached out denim jacket for Spring 2010 at (capsule) show. We have the expected treatment against the denim wash with the addition of pleated leather on the lower back of the jacket. They’re loving the pleated leather at the moment as it shows up in other garments in their Spring collection.

Selectism - Capsule Show | Cole, Rood, Haan & Co. "1985" Collection

Cole, Rood, Haan & Co. previewed their “1985″ Collection at (capsule) show. The collection reproduces their complete catalog from 1985 with a few updates here and there on build. Like most Cole, Rood, Haan & Co shoes, they are made from Italian leather. I just wish I had that old catalog to compare them.

Capsule Show | S.N.S. Herning Merino Wool Undershirts

Selectism - Capsule Show | S.N.S. Herning Merino Wool Undershirts

For Spring/Summer 2010 S.N.S. Herning has prepared a small series of knits sharing a common heritage and origin. Many items stem from S.N.S.’s founder Soren Sielsen Skyt’s collection of knitted undergarments from the 1920s. Spied at (capsule) Las Vegas, the merino wool undershirt shares the same texture and cut as the original garments. The collar of the shirt was “discovered” in a local textile museum, prompting a search for the vintage machinery that would eventual reproduce its weave.

The shirt holds to the central tenants of the season’s line – simplicity and serenity – well representative of what is to come.
