The Beatles say Hello, Hello to Comme des Garcons

Selectism - the-beatles-comme-des-garcon

WWD reports in with some very interesting news combining (arguably) the biggest band from England with Japan’s CdG line. What’s interesting about the collaboration is how reluctant Apple Corp, rights holders for The Beatles, have been about licensing out the name for anything other than music related products. “Comme des Garcons and Apple Corps Ltd. – the London-based company that manages the legacy and musical catalog of the British band – are teaming up to launch a new collection of bags under The Beatles/Comme des Garcons label, with the first styles slated to debut mid-November at Dover Street Market, Kawakubo’s multi-brand emporium in London, and Gyre in Tokyo, with additional distribution to follow…”

The Disstonian Institute | A History of Disston Saws

selectism - The Disstonian Institute | A History of Disston Saws

Fell upon the Disstonian Institute over the weekend, and subsequently spent much of next few days trolling through its pages. Few websites are so dedicated and comprehensive in their coverage of a single manufacturer, in this case Disston Saws. Disston’s history begins in the 1840s, when Henry Disston was freed at age 21 from his apprenticeship to saw makers William and Charles Johnson (by way of bankruptcy). The following years found Henry suffering set backs (like being swindled by a fraudulent landlord), but did not deter the man. Fires burned down his factories three times before 1850. Still, in 1855 he became the only saw manufacturer to make his own steel.

The resolve of its founder and superior quality of product made Disston the largest selling saw in America during the first half of the 20th-century. Success leads to a good story, all of which is contained in the Disstonian Institute, covering saws, stamps, and even advertising. A great American tale, and one worth spending time working through.

Some selected advertisements and examples of Disston backsaws after the jump.

Kolor Tweed Shawl Neck Jacket

selectism - kolor-tweed-jacket-01

Like everyone else in fashion (or ’style’ if you like to think you’re above fashion) we’ve fallen for tweed. And while we love it in a blazer, it’s nice to see someone attempting something different with it. Kolor have taken up that challenge, making a shawl neck bomber jacket using the material. It’s not something you’d see everyday, which is what makes it such a great piece. It’s available from Museum Arks right now, but we’d advise holding off until the likes of Opening Ceremony and Browns get their orders in. (Musuem Ark)

selectism - Alphonse Mattia | Studio Craft Furniture

Alphonse Mattia is one of the leading studio furniture makers in America. His work tackles the concept of “usefulness,” blending emotion and meaning with utility. He teaches at the Rhode Island School of Design. Located in nearby Fall River, MA, his Smokestack studious is shared by several other major players in the studio craft community – including wife Roseanne Somerson. Both are names anyone interested in contemporary American furniture should know.

Above are his “6inch Benches” built of laminated curley maple and epoxy resin inlay.

selectism - maison-margiela-oki-ni-archive-01

Focusing on Raf Simons, Nike and Levi’s to date, Oki-Ni’s archive feature is one of the most intriguing features we’ve seen attempted by an online retailer. Next up on their archive list is Maison Martin Margiela – aka Jay-Z’s favourite label. While they’ve released a couple of shots on the site, we’ve got hold of a few exclusive ones for your viewing perusal. Without giving away too much, Hov would approve.

Stephan Schneider Hooded Canvas Coat

selectism - stephan-schneider-canvas-coat-01

Believe it or not, but there’s still some crazy folks out there who don’t like duffle coats. They usually mumble something about it ‘not dealing well with the rain’  – a fair point. But the defining feature of duffle coats is their toggles, so what if you took those and applied it to a hooded canvas number? Well, luckily enough, Stephan Schneider’s done just that. The charcoal colour and asymetrical toggle placement make it a perfect candidate for a solid, everyday winter coat – and a worth alternative to the duffle coat. (South Willard)

Oliver Spencer Fishtail Trousers

28 September 2009, 10.30 | Posted in Fashion | No comments »

selectism - oliver-spencer-fishtail-trouser-01

So here’s the problem. We like trousers, but most versions are so lightweight and slim fit that you can see a visible outline of our thighs whilst we walk. It’s not a pretty sight. The solution is get some weightier trousers – they cope far better in poor weather and they won’t look like you’re exposing yourself. Oliver Spencer’s fishtail trousers do the job great and they even come unfinished, so you can hem them to your satisfaction. You could even leave them unhemmed and roll them up – although we wouldn’t recommend that. (Oliver Spencer)

Take a look at detailed shots after that leap.
