What is Rock & Roll? For Gail Buckland, Rock & Roll is more than just a sound, it is a communal spirit. As a photography historian, Buckland has covered a fair range of topics. Her latest, not surprisingly, is Rock & Roll. In Who Shot Rock & Roll: A Photographic History, 1955-Present Who Shot Rock & Roll: A Photographic History, 1955 PresentBuckland compiles a thrilling list of figures in both portrait and action photographs. The obvious names – Dylan, Jagger, and Lennon – are there. So are rappers like LL Cool J and Salt ‘n Pepper. In this, Buckland offers not just a compelling photographic history, but one that speaks to the intermingling of sounds and breadth of “rock & roll” as a cultural phenomenon. Some audiophiles might scoff, understandably, yet those who live music through the stars and find inspiration in the voices will certainly be pleased by the selections.

Who Shot Rock & Roll releases later this month from Random House.
