One of the standout pieces releasing from J. Crew’s Spring/Summer 2010 line is the Fireman Jacket. Seen on the model to your left, the jacket takes its shape and quick release clasps from a traditional fire fighter’s coat. Clearly there are some major differences between inspiration and final product – it’s a slimmed and contemporary cut skipping the usual yellow for a more useful navy. Two cargo pockets provide for storage needs.
Discussing the jacket, Frank Muytjens (J. Crew’s head of men’s design) notes, “We particularly love it because of its utilitarian purposes and authentic functioning details. We updated it through fit and fabric and picked a gutsy waxed canvas to retain the masculine aura… gave it an aggressive wash to make it look broken in and used, a rugged look.”

J. Crew really needs to figure out another way to distance themselves from their preppiosity besides the rumpled affectation. It has become weak and borders on a thrift store look. Mind you, I love the fireman jacket, but it loses its panache amidst the sea of mono-textured, wrinkles and rumples.
