The Moon at the Museum of Fine Arts Houston

selectism - The Moon at the Museum of Fine Arts Houston

With the 40 year anniversary of man’s landing on the moon in swing, the MFA Houston celebrates visions of the moon in art. The selected pieces explore 5 centuries of fascination with the moon. Work by Old Masters and Impressionists sit alongside photographs taken during the Apollo 11 expedition.

Originally conceived by Andreas Bluhm, director of the Wallraft-Richartz-Museum, the exhibition has been expanded for Houston. The reasons for that should be obvious enough. Complementing the exhibition, a special web component has been developed. There video and sample paintings mingle with low barrier of entry quiz game (note: my attempts at winning this game were less than successful). Check it out here.

Two of the fine pieces included in the exhibition after the jump.

Ally Capellino Spring/Summer 2010 Preview

selectism - ally-capellino-spring-2010-preview-01

SL favourite Ally Capellino has just given us their SS10 collection and, as always, it’s a great one. In fact, it’s a veritable bag armada. And because it’s a bag armada, we thought we’d just give you a preview for now and save the rest of the collection for later on this week.

Aside from the usual goodness that Capellino delivers, the SS10 collection also marks their 30th anniversary since being launched in 1980. Material wise, it’s just what you’d expect: vegetable tanned leather, canvas and waxed cotton. There are a couple of new styles, including an especially fetching backpack – see if you can spot it after the leap.

selectism - James Naismith: The Man Who Invented Basketball

James Naismith: The Man Who Invented Basketball James Naismith: The Man Who Invented Basketball is the first book to fully explore the life of the man known primarily for convincing folks that tossing a ball through a small hoop is great exercise. Written by Rob Rains and Helen Carpenter, James Naismith blends the usual account of the games invention with a full picture of the man’s ambition and his contributions to education. The forward is provided by Roy Williams. Early reviews suggest that both Billy Packer and Bob Knight think the work is excellent.

Releasing through Temple University Press just in time for NBA tip-off .

Florsheim for Duckie Brown Brogue Boots

selectism - florsheim-duckie-brown-brogue-boot-01

While we like a good ol’ workwear-esque boot, sometimes we need something just a little sleeker. Something you could conceivably wear with trousers (proper trousers, not chinos). Something like this brogue boot. The best thing about this boot – aside from the English brogue-ing – is the height. The cropped height makes it easier to get on than traditional brogue boots and better suited to rolled up trousers – just remember to scuff the soles before you take them anywhere.  (Forward)

Take a look at more pictures after the leap.

Timberland for Opening Ceremony Moccasin Boot

selectism - timberland-moccasin-boot-01

Opening Ceremony have been going hard on the workwear front this season, much to some peeps chagrin. The main knock against OC is that they’re just trend hopping hipsters. True or not, while they’re ordering in boots like these, we really couldn’t care about OC’s intentions.

Like most collaborations these days, this is actually a custom order of an existing model (which we featured back in July) as opposed to a true collaboration – although that term is becoming more diluted by the day. Bitching aside, these are great boots; perfect for adverse weather and much slimmer than the 6 inch boot – which makes it an easier job to fit with some tapered denim/cords/chinos. (Opening Ceremony)

Detailed shots after that leap.

Velour Cable Knit Jumper

20 October 2009, 10.30 | Posted in Fashion | 2 comments »

selectism - velour-cable-knit-jumper-01

Let’s cut to the chase: this is a navy cable knit jumper and we don’t have much to say about it. It’s not that we don’t like it, it’s just that it’s hard to roll out the superlatives for a navy jumper, regardless of how nice it is. What we will say is that it’d go great with some coloured cords (Uniqlo have the best variety), it’s on sale at £65/$106 and it’s only available in XL. And that’s all there is to it. (ASOS)

01. Hometown, America

“California and New York are places where people go to make it big. Missouri is a place where the big once were small. The list of those who spent a portion of their youths in the “show-me state” runs long: from Burt Bacharach to Eminem, T.S. Eliot to J.C. Penney, Calamity Jane to Kenneth Lay . . . on it goes.” (designobserver)

02. The Sacred Made Real at the National Gallery

“In the northern Spanish city of Valladolid, I am examining the corpse of a man who has suffered a terrible and sustained assault. His eyes are glazed in death, his mouth hangs open, his body is covered in a mass of wounds and lacerations.” (telegraph)

04. Frieze Week Report (above)

“Frieze week reportThe vibe this year at Frieze was future-facing; mention of the downturn bought about visible ennui. Instead, it was all green shoots and what’s next. The main Frieze tent in Regent’s Park was its usual heady mix of hustlers, heavily botoxed collectors, students and artists all scribbling notes, gossiping and clicking away with cameras” (wallpaper*)
