Selectism - Paul Smith Union Jack Umbrella

My goodness. Today is the day for British inspired goods. If we’re covering raincoats during these cold months, then we might as well hit some umbrellas. Paul Smith is a favorite of course. This Union Jack inspired umbrella works well with a wooden handle embossed with the Paul Smith name. Black exterior covering up the clearly visible and familiar Jack interior. Simple and elegant. (coggles)

Selectism - Ettinger Wallets Purple Collection

Since posting the Browns Mainline Multi-colored wallets, we thought it would be fair to showcase some other players in the fine men’s wallet game. Ettinger of London is another heritage line that has developed a grand set of collection, working with the likes of automaker, Bentley, and tennis’ Wimbledon. “Founded by Gerry Ettinger over 70 years ago, the company is still family owned and run by his elder son, Robert Ettinger. We are one of the few remaining British luxury leather goods companies still manufacturing in the UK and pride ourselves on designing and hand crafting only the finest leather goods.” Above we showcase their “Purple Collection” of finely crafted leather wallets, keyholder, and coin purses for the gentleman.

Selectism - Mister Freedom 1st Gear Collection Autumn/Winter 2009

Mister Freedom drops a great set of looks for their 1st Gear collection entitled, “Speed-Safe Clothing for Modern Riders.” 1st Gear or Autumn/Winter 2009 as we prefer to call it, is a short run collection of finely tailored goods. “With the “Speed-Safe Clothing for Modern Riders” collection Mister Freedom delves deep into the vaults of lost designs and modifies them to today’s needs of riders and non-riders of two wheeled motorized vehicles… Every piece is manufactured by Toyo Enterprises (Sugar Cane) with the utmost attention to detail, just as you’d expect from anything produced by Toyo and overseen by Mister Freedom himself, Christophe Loiron.”

Four pieces are bring shown as part of the 1st Gear collection. “Rider’s Dungarees made of a beautiful left hand twill denim, a Mechanic’s Shirt made of a indigo salt & pepper fabric similar to a medium weight chambray, a Mechanic’s Sweatshirt available in three colors with great detailing and fabric that has to be felt in person to be fully understood, and last but not least a Denim Rider’s Cap which is exclusive to Self Edge San Francisco outside of Japan.”

Revolution on Paper: Mexican Prints 1910-1930

selectism - Revolution on Paper: Mexican Prints 1910-1930

Revolution on Paper will exhibit for the first time in Europe the great age of Mexican printmaking. The “three greats” – Diego Rivera, Jose Clemente Orozoco, and David Alfaro Sisqueiros – are well represented in the 130 assembled works. Art became a vaulted vehicle for promoting the values of the Mexican revolution. Aside from the creation of large scale murals, mass-produced prints became important method of disseminating ideals and values for the newly established left-wing government.

Revolution on Paper includes some of the icons of Mexican print culture from this important era in the nation’s artistic history. The exhibition opens at the British Museum on October 22 and closes April 5, 2010.

Selectism Q&A | APC’s Jean Touitou

selectism - Selectism Q&A | APC's Jean Touitou

As a brand, APC needs little introduction. Simplicity rules in the paired down offerings, all of which are geared toward essential wardrobe needs. The man behind APC is Tunisian-born designer Jean Touitou. Like his garments, Jean’s thoughts about the garment industry are direct and to the point. With refreshing honesty, Touitou took time to answer a few of our questions about APC and the state of the field in general.

Jil Sander Spring/Summer 2010 Footwear

16 October 2009, 17.30 | Posted in Shoes | 1 comment »

selectism - jil-sander-spring-2010-footwear-01What can you say about shoes like these? They’re handsome for one. That shade of beige is great and would mix very well with wine red, pea green or navy. More importantly, they’ve got a sleekness that shoes of this ilk just don’t have. The collection in itself is rather tiny; just this one style in various colours and some sandals in case your feet need airing. Sandals are still a marmite topic in menswear, but more power to anyone who can pull them off.

Take a gander at the rest of the collection after the leap.

Mighty Warship Olympia Tattoo Festival

curated mag - Mighty Warship Olympia Tattoo Festival

If old school tattooing is your thing, you might consider heading to Philadelphia this weekend. The Mighty Warship Olympia Tattoo Festival brings 40 artists practicing traditional American styles aboard Independence Seaport Museum’s 1892 National Historic Landmark Cruiser Olympia. It’s a rare opportunity to get tattooed in the same manner as a 19th-century sailor – except without the potential for syphilis.

While there you can also view Skin and Bones, the museum’s original exhibition exploring the roll of tattoos in the life of the American sailor (note: I served as a content consultant).

Great fun for all. Running October 16 – 18.

Head to the jump to check the poster. Above is a historic image of tattooing aboard the Olympia. (via Curated).

Church’s launch E-Commerce Site

selectism - churchs-footwear-01

We should be shocked. A brand like Church’s would have surely balked at launching an online store last year, but fast forward a year and here we are. First though, the bad news. Shipping right now is limited to select countries in Europe, which is annoying, but not a problem a proxy couldn’t fix. The good news is that Church’s have put up the vast majority of their collection online in a variety of colourways you’re unlikely to find elsewhere. (Church’s)

We’ve picked out five of our favourites. Take a leap to see which ones we chose.

Nigel Cabourn Zip Cardigan

16 October 2009, 13.30 | Posted in Fashion | No comments »

selectism - nigel-cabourn-zip-cardigan-01

Nigel Cabourn has been getting a lot of love from stores lately; we can’t swing a virtual cat without hitting another store selling his cameraman coat and shawl collar jumper. Oki-Ni are the latest to get in some Cabourn, but as the London based online store have deep ties in Japan, they’ve been able to get hold of pieces that we haven’t seen at any English language online store thus far. This zip cardigan, based on a vintage German piece from Cabourn’s personal archive, is our pick of the bunch. If there’s one man who could make cotton panelling and wool arms work on a cardigan, it’s Cabourn. (Oki-Ni)

The song remains the same, detailed look after the leap.
