Tokyo | Arts & Crafts Fishnet Messenger Bag

Selectism - Arts & Crafts Fish Net Messenger Bag

I had one of those days. The shops today unlike past days were not happy with my photo snapping, but I was still able to get a few looks off. This messenger was an interesting piece. It comes to us from Arts & Crafts and features a fishnet front pocket quick storage of your personals. This shop had the messenger bags available in green and grey. Leather straps finish the closure. Well constructed as well.

Eugenia Kim Check Wool Hat

Hats are a tricky proposition. Sure, they fit in well on Mad Men, but that was when everyone wore hats – wearing a Don-esque hat now would only look like costume. And the Pete Doherty hat hanging off the head look? Don’t even think about it.

In between those two extremes is this Eugenia Kim hat, which is both old and new school. Old school enough to evoke memories of Mad Men, albeit more reminscent of the beatniks from season one than Don himself; new school enough to wear in this day and age without looking like a member of a Libertines tribute band. No hard feat. (Matches)

J. Crew Spring/Summer 2010 | Fireman Jacket

selectism - J. Crew Spring/Summer 2010 | Fireman Jacket

One of the standout pieces releasing from J. Crew’s Spring/Summer 2010 line is the Fireman Jacket. Seen on the model to your left, the jacket takes its shape and quick release clasps from a traditional fire fighter’s coat. Clearly there are some major differences between inspiration and final product – it’s a slimmed and contemporary cut skipping the usual yellow for a more useful navy. Two cargo pockets provide for storage needs.

Discussing the jacket, Frank Muytjens (J. Crew’s head of men’s design) notes, “We particularly love it because of its utilitarian purposes and authentic functioning details. We updated it through fit and fabric and picked a gutsy waxed canvas to retain the masculine aura… gave it an aggressive wash to make it look broken in and used, a rugged look.”

J. Lindeberg Grey Shawl Collar Cardigan

30 October 2009, 14.30 | Posted in Fashion | No comments »

selectism - j-lindeberg-shawl-collar-cardigan-01

Here we go again, it’s another shawl collar cardigan. We know there’s other types of cardi’s out right now but these are our favourite right now. This cardigan is a pretty basic – but in a good way. Sometimes the amount of time spent buying ’statement’ pieces leaves a wearers wardrobe bereft of the basics. We still feel the best way to get a shawl collar cardi would be to order direct from from a company like Inverallan, but we understand if you’re not up for waiting six weeks while it’s made. Take a look at the model pulling some fancy, if unneccessary, poses after the leap.

Filson Green Rucksack

selectism - filson-rucksack-01

This is one of those obvious picks. Not that we’re ‘over’ Filson or anything, but at this point, everyone knows about them. Everyone knows the level of quality in their bags, the rugged finish, the vegetable tanned leather handles and the fact they’re made in the USA – so there’s no need for us to go on about it. What we will say is that the green makes a nice change from the usual navy (we’re sure you’ve got at least one navy bag already) and it costs £215. (Oi Polloi)

Plenty of detailed images after that leap.

01. Nowhere Boy Trailer 2009 (above)

“Filmed in Liverpool about John Lennon’s life.”

02. Loft L / Adawittfeldarchitektur

“Loft L is located in the south of Aachen within a mixed context of detached 1-3 story dwellings and single-family homes. The building extension consists of prefabricated timber framework elements placed on top of an existing house from the late 50s. The specific shape was generated according to zoning constraints existing on site. The extension has generated additional living space, a “parent floor” for a young pair with two children. The project and its construction was featured on local TV, and with its unique shape, selection of materials, and the new “view” created, the building can be seen as a role model for similar rooftop extensions.” (archdaily)

03. Opera by Axel Enthoven

“Belgian architect Axel Enthoven has designed a mobile holiday hope that resembles the Sydney Opera House…Called Opera, the canvas holiday home unfolds from a trailer and includes two beds, a toilet, hot and cold water, LED lighting and a mobile hob.” (dezeen)

04. Cabinet of the (Material & Virtual) World by Jon Stam & Ivo de Kogel

“Not exactly the wardrobe to Narnia, but useful nonetheless, a double-sided cabinet provides access to the material and virtual worlds.” (mocoloco)

Selectism - Fjallraven Oban Jacket

The Oban jacket from Fjallraven is built from the G-1000 material line which was originally used for tents and trousers by expedition legend, Hasse Hellström, one of Sweden’s foremost experts on Greenland and a member of the glacier researcher group, Friluftsfrämjande. Developed in 1966, the G-1000 fabric line also made its way into a variety of outwear jackets, including our pick here. (context)

selectism - Who Shot Rock and Roll at the Brooklyn Museum

Having already made mention of the wonderful book Who Shot Rock and Roll, a quick nod to the exhibition of same name opening tomorrow at the Brooklyn Museum. Touted as the first major museum show to to put rock and roll photographers at the forefront, the exhibition will run through January 30, 2010. The show is devised in six sections ranging from candid snapshots of young musicians to the conceptual images for album covers that inform of the collaborative effort between musical and visual artist. Gail Buckland is guest curator for Who Shot Rock and Roll.
