Selectism - Ajs 10R; The Racer That Wasn't

01. Aluminum in Modern Architecture

“From guest contributor, Sam Grawe comes this rare gem put together by the Reynolds Company. Crazy slipcase and stamped cloth casewraps. So good. According to the last page: “Design by the Styling and Design Department. Reynolds Metal Company.” (bookworship)

02. 50 Favorite Personal Fragrance Designs

“We have sifted through the archives and have gathered our top 50 favorite personal fragrance package designs! See which ones made the cut after the jump, and be sure to share in the comments which ones are your top favorites. Remember you can click each image to view the original post to find out more information on each design. Enjoy!” (dieline)

03. Ajs 10R; The Racer That Wasn’t (above)

“I had the good fortune of corresponding with James J. Ward last year, about South American motorcycle racing. His interest lay principally in a very elusive beast; the AJS ‘10R’, larger sibling to the AJS 7R, and true twin of the Matchless G45. Never advertised or spoken of in the day, the ‘10R’ magically appeared at the request of perhaps only two dealers, who had their own reasons to demand an AJS badge to their 500cc racing efforts…” (vintagent)

01. Bike Rack by Studio Tractor

“I got a note from Mike Tower of Studio Tractor Architecture the other day showing off his firm’s collaboration with metalworker Peter Kirkiles, a cotter pin-inspired bike rack built in conjuction with Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum’s new exhibition Bike Rides. The show opens today at the Ridgefield, Connecticut, museum.” (dwell)

02. Another Man’s 9th Issue

““AnOther Man speaks to the ‘other’ man, a man not being catered to currently by fashion magazines. AnOther Man mixes credible modern icons with art, music, high impact fashion photography and strong opinionated writing by key cultural voices. A magazine for men who like their lifestyle rocked with passion and intelligence, luxury and a sense of adventure.” (anotherman)

03. Hedgehog: A Concert Pavilion Made From Traffic Cones

“NYC-based architecture firm EFGH has really made the most out of a tiny budget and a wildly short timeline with Hedgehog, a 15′x15′ performance pavilion. The stage hosted a lineup of diverse street performers as part of an effort by Virgin Mobile to raise money for youth homelessness.” (core77)

04. Human Powered Velomobile Bikes over Land or Sea (above)

“Now that it’s clear that the flying cars we were promised as youngsters are not going to appear anytime soon, we can perhaps take comfort in the arrival of the brilliant HEPAV 1.1, a human-electric powered amphibious vehicle from the creative mind of Czech designer and inventor David Buchwaldek. Like an eco-superhero’s signature ride, the HEPAV 1.1 can travel the streets in style and drive straight into the water without missing a beat. Sustainable, human-powered locomotion never looked so good.” (inhabitant)

Thorocraft Shelton and Hudson Shoes

Selectism - Thorocraft Shelton and Hudson Shoes

Following up on our earlier post on Thorocraft, we preview two new models coming this Spring 2010. The Shelton and Hudson may be shoes but we prefer to call them boots. Their low sole allows them to be worn more properly while retaining that casual feel. The suede on the Hudons with it’s white stitching is a nice contrast, but for the rainier days, the Shelton is the standout.

Bike Rides at the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum

curated mag - Bike Rides at the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum

Bike culture, arguably, has reached an all-time high in the United States. Art related to two wheeled adventure and transport appears quite regularly, but rarely with the scope presented in Bike Rides. Now on view at Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum in Ridgefield, CT, the exhibition presents a multi-media and multi-medium view of the bicycle in contemporary culture. From the purely art based object to concept bicycles, the range both impressive and provides a comprehensive overview of current thinking about the bike, sustainability, and urban travel. The project was organized by the museum’s curators with consulting advice from artist and cyclist David Byrne. Learn more direct from the Aldrich.

On view until January 3, 2010.

Confederacy’s New Suits

Selectism - Confederacy's New Suits

Our friends at Valet Mag profile Confederacy which has some musical interests. “Never before have suits been considered so cool. So who better than a rock star to release a line of suiting slick enough for the stage, yet timeless enough for dinner with the in-laws. The Strokes’ Albert Hammond Jr.’s line has just landed at LA’s Confederacy, so we caught up with the shop’s owner, stylist Ilaria Urbinati, who co-designed the range. While not your typical 9-5 duds, the suits certainly have a classic, rakish charm. But we’ll let Urbinati tell you about them in her own words.”
